Bears Defeat Flyers in Outdoor Classic Alumni Game, 9-5

January 19, 2018

In a battle of some of the greatest players in AHL and NHL history, the Hershey Bears came out victorious, defeating the Philadelphia Flyers 9-5 in the 2018 Capital BlueCross Outdoor Classic Alumni Game Friday night at Hersheypark Stadium. The game was the opening event of the 2018 Capital BlueCross Outdoor Classic, which will conclude tomorrow night as the Bears and Lehigh Valley Phantoms play an AHL regular season game outdoors at 7 p.m.

Standouts in Friday's Alumni Game included Hershey's Graham Mink who was named the game's first star with two goals and an assist. Hershey's Mike McHugh also tallied two goals and an assist.

The Flyers Alumni Association iced a team that featured the famed 'Legion of Doom' line of Hockey Hall of Fame member Eric Lindros, John LeClair, and Mikael Renberg. The aforementioned three players combined for 2,388 career regular season games in the NHL. Both Lindros and LeClair had big chances in the game for the Flyers, but Lindros was denied by a big glove save by Phil Sauve in the first half, while Hershey netminder Freddy Cassivi robbed LeClair in the second half.

The Bears roster featured an honorary player in defender Ray Bourque, who is widely considered as one of the best defenders in the history of the National Hockey League, and holds the record for most career goals, assists, and points by a blue liner. The long-time Boston Bruin won the Norris Trophy as the NHL's best defender five times, and claimed the Stanley Cup as a member of the Colorado Avalanche in 2001. Bourque honored his son, Hershey forward Chris, by wearing uniform #17. The elder Bourque tallied an assist on Boyd Kane's goal that opened the game.

Hershey got goals from Kane, Nick Kypreos, Rob Shearer, Mink (2), McHugh (2), Vinny Prospal, and Dennis Bonvie. Bonvie, know for dropping the gloves, scrapped in the final minute of the game with Philadelphia's Riley Cote.

Scoring for the Flyers included goals from Todd Fedoruk, Jesse Boulerice (2), Jeff Chychrun, and Cote.

The Bears take the ice outdoors for the 2018 Capital BlueCross Outdoor Classic tomorrow night. Game time against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms is slated for 7 p.m. from Hersheypark Stadium. Ticket packages for the event, including Pepsi Fan Fest, and a free 2018 Hersheypark Pass, start at just $59. Ticket information is available on HersheyBears.com.
