Bears Win Third Straight with 6-1 Rout of Phantoms

November 11, 2017

Mathias Bau continued his hot hand, scoring twice, to lead the Hershey Bears to a 6-1 victory over the Lehigh Valley Phantoms in front of 10,295 fans on Saturday night at Giant Center. Chris Bourque and Travis Boyd each notched three assists in the victory, and Pheonix Copley stopped 24 shots in goal on a night Hershey wore USA-themed jerseys as part of Hometown Heroes Night.

The Bears posted a field goal in the opening period, with the first goal coming from Hershey captain Garrett Mitchell. With room along the right wing, Mitchell cut in front of the net and buried a low shot through the five-hole of  Lehigh Valley goalie Alex Lyon at the 5:13 mark.

The 1-0 lead carried into the later stages of the period, when the Chocolate and White built a 3-0 cushion prior to intermission. At 17:32, Bau poked a rebound into the cage with Hershey on their first power play of the night.

With 36 seconds left in the period, Hershey's furious forecheck cashed in once more. A Tyler Lewington blast from the point deflected off Lyon and trickled across the goal line to make it 3-0. The Bears possessed a commanding 16-3 lead in shots after 20 minutes.

Hershey fought off early second period pressure sustained by Lehigh Valley and added yet another insurance marker. With 10:41 to play in the middle stanza, Wayne Simpson scored his fifth of the season, and third goal in his last three games. On an offensive zone rush, Simpson snapped a wrist shot low to the ice past the blocker side of Lyon. Boyd and Bourque assisted as Simpson scored for a third straight game.

Hershey's 4-0 lead is the largest the team has carried into the third period this season, and the Bears struck twice more to finish the night strong. Riley Barber scored 4:09 into the third period, putting a shot top corner over the glove of Lyon to make it 5-0. The goal was Barber's third tally of the season.

Bau finished the night with a power play marker at 9:24, one-timing a Boyd pass for his second goal of the night. The forward snapped a shot from the right wing past Lyon's glove to make it 6-0 for Hershey. Bourque collected his third assist of then night, giving him 21 points on the season, the top mark in the AHL.

Copley was solid in goal earning his third win of the season, only surrendering a Greg Carey power play marker with eight minutes to play. The Bears outshot the Phantoms 33-25 in the win.

Hershey was 2-for-3 on the power play while Lehigh Valley was just 1-for-7. Hershey improved to 6-6-0-2 with the victory.

The Bears go for a fourth straight win tomorrow night versus Wilkes-Barre/Scranton at 5 p.m. It's David A. Smith Printing Team Photo Night for the first 5,000 fans and Team Autograph Night after the game. It's also Dietz & Watson Dollar Dog Night. Ticket information is available at HersheyBears.com
