BEARS NEWS AND NOTES:

SERIES SO FAR: In Game 1 last Friday, Hershey’s Nathan Walker ended a scoreless deadlock, striking at 7:38 of overtime, to give Hershey a 1-0 victory over the Phantoms. Hershey goaltender Pheonix Copley stopped 32 shots as Hershey took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five playoff series. In Game 2 last Saturday, Hershey scored three goals in the third period to earn a 5-4 comeback victory. After Lehigh Valley got two goals from Greg Carey late in the second period of play, Hershey entered the second intermission trailing 4-2. The Bears rallied in the third period thanks to two goals from Chris Bourque. The forward scored the game-winning marker with just 33 seconds left in the game. Despite being outshot 34-17, Hershey escaped with the victory at the PPL Center. In Game 3 this past Wednesday, Hershey returned to the Giant Center with a chance to sweep the series. However, the Phantoms came away with a 2-1 overtime win to force Game 4. Stanislav Galiev had Hershey’s lone goal, and former Bear Chris Conner scored the winning marker just 1:49 into overtime.

CHANDLER’S BACK: The Washington Capitals announced Friday that forward Chandler Stephenson was re-assigned to the Bears. Stephenson, 23, tallied 38 points (10 goals, 28 assists) in 72 games this season with Hershey. He ranked fifth on the team in assists, and seventh overall in points. Stephenson notched five assists in 11 games during the regular season versus Lehigh Valley, and he has scored 11 points (two goals, nine assists) in 27 career playoff games. He was originally a third round selection, 77th overall, by Washington in the 2012 NHL Draft. The Saskatoon native has appeared in four games with Washington this season, but did not skate in any playoff games during his recall.

STAN THE MAN: After being held without a goal for 15 straight games, Hershey forward Stanislav Galiev has scored in back-to-back contests. Galiev, who enjoyed a fantastic start to 2017, notched a pair of goals on Mar. 12, but then struggled to find the back of the net for the final 14 games of the regular season. After being held off the scoreboard in Game 1 of the series, Galiev notched Hershey’s opening goal in Game 2 at Lehigh Valley. He also scored the first goal of the contest in Game 3 for Hershey, and the native of Russia now has three goals in just eight career playoff games. Galiev leads Hershey with four points (two goals, two assists) in the playoffs.

CHANCE FOR CT: Hershey forward Christian Thomas could make his 2017 Calder Cup Playoffs debut this evening. With Hershey’s depth at forward, and the team’s recent success, Thomas has been scratched for eight of the past nine games. However, Thomas looks to bring an injection of offense into Hershey’s lineup. He finished tied for the team lead in goals, and set personal bests in goals (24), assists (25), and points (49) this season. He also looks to help Hershey’s power play, which has not scored in the series. Thomas’ 12 power play goals in the regular season led the Bears. The Toronto native also enjoyed success versus the Phantoms this season. He struck for eight points (three goals, five assists) in 10 regular season games versus Lehigh Valley.

CONNER HAUNTS HERSHEY: Lehigh Valley forward Chris Conner burned his former club by notching the overtime goal for Lehigh Valley in Game 3 Wednesday night. Conner collected six goals in the regular season versus the Bears, including tallying a hat trick on Apr. 2. Conner spent the 2014-15 season with Hershey, posting 52 points (19 goals, 33 assists) in 61 games. He was roommates with fellow former Michigan Tech product Pheonix Copley.

BIG GAME BOURQUE: Hershey’s Chris Bourque scored twice, including striking for the game-winning goal with just 33 seconds to play, to lead Hershey to a 5-4 win in Game 2. Bourque ranks first all-time in Hershey franchise history in playoff scoring with 78 points (22 goals, 56 assists) in 97 games. He ranks second in AHL playoff history in assists with 78, just two away from Darren Haydar’s record of 80. Bourque is third all-time in AHL history in playoff games played behind former Hershey skaters Boyd Kane (128) and Bryan Helmer (159).

HISTORY BOOKS: Defender T.J. Brennan of Lehigh Valley ranks second all-time in goals among AHL defenders with 134. Earlier this season, he surpassed former Bears defender Bryan Helmer, who had 129 goals in his Hall of Fame AHL career. Helmer is currently Hershey’s Vice President of Hockey Operations.
