Copley Steals Show in Hershey's 2-1 Win at St. John's

March 26, 2017

(St. John's, NL- March 26, 2017)-Pheonix Copley’s sensational performance in goal will be the lasting memory left by the Hershey Bears hockey team in St. John’s, Newfoundland.  Hershey played its final regular season game at the Mile One Centre and skated away with a 2-1 victory over the St. John’s IceCaps on Sunday afternoon. Copley stopped 35 shots, and Jakub Vrana scored the game-winning goal in the victory.

The Bears gave Copley an early lead with a marker at 13:23 of the first period. Riley Barber collected his 11th goal of the season thanks to a great passing play. Vrana stole the puck in the corner and centered to Travis Boyd. With Barber open in front, Boyd made a backhand pass to Barber, and the forward capitalized, beating St. John’s goaltender Charlie Lindgren to make it 1-0 Hershey.

The game would remain 1-0 until the 3:16 mark of the third period. This time it was Barber who setup Vrana on a three-on-two rush. Barber dashed down the right wing and slid a pass across to Vrana in the slot. The forward darted in, and snapped a shot over the glove of Lindgren for his 15th goal of the season.

The IceCaps broke Copley’s shutout bid with 5:05 to play as Chris Terry scored his 25th goal of the season to make it 2-1. The tally was Terry’s 15th power play goal of the year as he beat Copley over the left arm with a slap shot.

Copley saved his best work for the third period, denying 16 IceCaps shots, including a flurry of chances in the closing minute. The goaltender improved to 7-2-0 since rejoining Hershey via a trade between the Washington Capitals and St. Louis Blues on Feb. 27.

The IceCaps outshot Hershey 36-28 in the contest. This is Hershey’s last visit to St. John’s as next year the IceCaps will relocate to Laval, Quebec and become the Laval Rocket.

The Bears return to action next Friday in Hartford versus the Wolf Pack at 7:05 p.m. The club then returns to Giant Center for a pair of games next weekend, starting with Fan Appreciation Night and Healthcare Night on Saturday, April 1 versus Bridgeport. The puck drops at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at HersheyBears.com
