Bears Stun Sound Tigers with 3-1 Win

March 19, 2017

(Bridgeport, CT- March 19, 2017)-Travis Boyd’s power play goal with 1:23 left in regulation pulled the Hershey Bears hockey team ahead, and stood as the game-winner in the club's a 3-1 victory over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Sunday afternoon at the Webster Bank Arena. The victory was Hershey’s fifth straight win and moved the club into third place in the Atlantic Division.

Ross Johnston opened the scoring for the Sound Tigers at 7:33 of the second period. The forward rushed down the left wing and fired a shot to the goal from a tight angle. The shot eluded Hershey netminder Pheonix Copley as Bridgeport made it 1-0.

Hershey evened the scoring at 14:04 on a power play marker from Paul Carey. A Bridgeport defender deflected Christian Djoos’ shot from the left point en route to the net. With Bridgeport goaltender Jaroslav Halak down on the ice, Carey knocked the puck out of mid-air and into the net for his 24th goal of the season. Carey, who scored four goals on Saturday, finished the weekend with eight points (six goals, two assists) in three games.

Thanks to a 33-save effort from Hershey goaltender Pheonix Copley, the game remained tied late into the third period. At 17:08, Bridgeport’s Kane Lafranchise was called for high-sticking. The Bears took advantage on the power play as Boyd scored his 13th goal of the season. With traffic in front of Halak, Boyd snapped a wrist shot from the left wing over the goaltender’s glove to make it 2-1. Djoos and Carey assisted.

With 57.7 seconds to play, Hershey captain Garrett Mitchell sealed the win, scoring into the empty net to make it 3-1 for the visitors.

Hershey went 2-for-4 on the power play while Bridgeport was 0-for-5. The Sound Tigers outshot Hershey 34-21. The win improved Hershey to 83 points and a record of 36-18-8-3. With Providence’s loss to Utica, Hershey moved into third place in the Atlantic Division.

Hershey returns to action on Wednesday night versus the Binghamton at the Giant Center. It’s Hersheypark Pass Night as the puck drops at 7 p.m. Ticket information is available on HersheyBears.com.
