Bears Shut Down Pirates, Force Deciding Game

April 30, 2016

HERSHEY, Pa. – Travis Boyd notched his first career playoff goal in the first period, and with Justin Peters turning away all 19 shots he faced, it stood up as the game-winner in the Hershey Bears’ 2-0 victory over the Portland Pirates on Saturday night at GIANT Center.

The Bears were looking for a dominant start and they got it tonight.  Tyler Lewington started a breakout with a short pass to Jakub Vrana, who took off down the right side with the puck on his backhand.  From the bottom of the right circle, Vrana fed the low slot, where Boyd roofed a snap shot over Mike McKenna at 12:51.

Moments later, Portland’s Jonathan Racine took the first penalty of the game.  Hershey’s power play, coming off of an 0-for-7 in Thursday’s game, struck gold when Chris Bourque fired a long-range slapper from the center point that found the net at 16:23.

The two goals would be all Peters needed.  Hershey’s defense locked the game down, and the penalty kill posted a perfect night for the second consecutive game, denying the Pirates on all three of their chances.

Peters improved to 2-1 in the postseason, while McKenna dropped to 2-2 with 26 saves on 28 shots.  The Bears finished 1-for-2 on the power play.

The decisive game five of this series will be played tomorrow, May 1 at 5:00 PM.  Tickets are available at the GIANT Center box office, by calling (717) 508-BEAR or online at TicketMaster.com.
