BEARS LOAN WHITMORE TO PHANTOMS, ACQUIRE VETERAN NEWBURY

HERSHEY, Pa. – The Hershey Bears announced today that the club has acquired forward Kris Newbury on loan from the Philadelphia Flyers, and have loaned forward Derek Whitmore to the American Hockey League’s Adirondack Phantoms. The announcements were made by Bears President/GM Doug Yingst.Newbury, 32, comes to Hershey in the midst of his 11th professional season. He has played most of 2013-14 with Adirondack, and ranked third on the team in goals (14) and second in assists (22) and points (36). He was tied for third in power play goals (six) and third in penalty minutes (182).
The 5-10, 205-pound native of Brampton, Ontario also appeared in four NHL contests with Philadelphia this season, recording one assist and seven penalty minutes.
Newbury has appeared in a total of 645 AHL games with the St. John’s Maple Leafs, Toronto Marlies, Grand Rapids Griffins, Hartford Wolf Pack/Connecticut Whale and Adirondack Phantoms, and has amassed 475 points (156 goals, 319 assists) along with 1,514 penalty minutes. He appeared in his 600th AHL game on October 25th against the Norfolk Admirals, and played his 700th professional game on December 21st also against Norfolk.
Newbury also has put up 10 points (four goals, six assists) and 139 penalty minutes in 76 NHL games with Toronto, Detroit, NY Rangers and Philadelphia.
Prior to turning pro, Newbury played five years of junior hockey with the OHL’s Belleville Bulls and Sarnia Sting, totaling 306 points (122 goals, 184 assists) in 306 games. Newbury was originally selected by the San Jose Sharks in the fifth round (139th overall) in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.
Whitmore, 29, recorded nine points (four goals, five assists) in 26 games with Hershey after returning from a 26-game stint with the DEL’s Augsburg Panthers.
