OPENING NIGHT GAME PREVIEW: PHANTOMS at BEARS

10/05/2013 -
TONIGHT’S GAME NOTES

BEARS vs. PHANTOMS:  Tonight is the home opener of the 76th Hershey Bears hockey season!  The Hershey Bears host the Adirondack Phantoms, the top AHL developmental affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers.

ALL-TIME:  The Bears hold a record of 87-77-14 (W – L/OTL – T/SOL) against the Phantoms in their time split between Philadelphia and Adirondack.  Last season, the Bears won the four-game series with a record of 3-1-0-0.  Hershey claimed their three victories by a combined score of 10-3 after dropping their first meeting on November 24.  One of the three Bears victories was a 3-0 shutout on February 23.

THE LAST TIME:  The Bears and Phantoms last met on the final weekend of the 2012-13 regular season in Glens Falls.  After abundant roster turnover earlier in the week, the Bears grabbed a big 2-1 victory at the Civic Center behind Cameron Schilling’s game-tying marker in the second period, and Michael Latta’s game-winner – his first goal with the Chocolate and White – with 4:41 left to play.  Philipp Grubauer made 20 saves in the victory, which proved to be a vital two points in moving the Bears onto postseason play.

FROM KANE TO DANE:  Forward Dane Byers will succeed former Bears forward Boyd Kane as team captain in 2013-2014.  The captaincy was announced on Friday.  Forwards Garrett Mitchell and Jeff Taffe were named alternate captains.  Byers is the 41st captain in Hershey Bears history.

GIANT START:  Tonight marks the first time since the 2009-10 season that the Bears will open at home.

SEE YOU LATER:  Tonight marks the only meeting between the Bears and Phantoms in the 2013 calendar year.  The Bears will play their next three games against Adirondack all on the road, with a February 1 afternoon tilt scheduled at Wells Fargo Center, the home of the Philadelphia Flyers.

AUSSIE MEGA:  Bidding to become the first Australian to ever play in the AHL, forward Nathan Walker impressed many with his pre-season work.  He scored the game’s first goal last Friday, a goal that turned up as the game-winner, in the Bears’ 6-0 victory over Utica.  He followed that by setting up David Marshall’s fourth point of the night last Saturday vs. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

WHITMORE POWERS THE PRE-SEASON PP:  New Bears forward Derek Whitmore returned to the U.S. mainland after a stint in Germany last season, and showed his special teams success by scoring two of the Bears’ three pre-season power play goals – one in each home game on the weekend.

STINGY:  The goaltenders in the Bears’ organizational depth chart had a remarkable pre-season, with no one allowing more than one goal.  David Leggio earned the shutout last Friday; Philipp Grubauer stopped 19 of 20 in Saturday’s win; and Brandon Anderson (6 saves/7 shots) and Riley Gill (13 saves/14 shots) played solidly last Sunday at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

MITCHELL 2.0:  The Washington Capitals acquired forward John Mitchell and the Anaheim Ducks’ fourth round selection in 2014 for former Bears star forward Mathieu Perreault on Sunday.
