MARLIES SNAP BEARS SEVEN-GAME POINT STREAK
TORONTO, Ontario – Drew MacIntyre made 17 saves for his first win in his first appearance with the Toronto Marlies, a 2-1 decision over the HERSHEY BEARS on Saturday afternoon at Ricoh Coliseum.
The Marlies were handed the first power play of the game and although the team was unable to convert, the hosts would take a 1-0 lead at the 4:20 mark. After poking the puck loose at center ice, Simon Gysbers sprung Andrew Crescenzi and Greg Scott for a two-on-one rush. Crescenzi held the puck and fired a low shot that beat Dany Sabourin low to the glove side.
The BEARS then had two chances to tie the game, but MacIntyre had the answer on both. He first stopped Ryan Stoa with a glove save, and later faced a wide-open Mattias Sjogren and made a point-blank save. HERSHEY also had two power play chances but Toronto’s penalty kill stood tall.
HERSHEY finally solved MacIntyre at 3:12 of the second period, while working their fourth power play of the game. Casey Wellman buried his first goal with his new team when he fired a shot from the slot low along the ice through a screen. The power play goal was set up by Ryan Potulny.
MacIntyre, who was most recently playing with the BEARS’ affiliate in Reading, later denied Wellman on a breakaway to keep the game tied. And just over five minutes later, the Marlies regained their lead when Tim Connolly sent a wrist shot through a screen and past Sabourin at 8:27.
The Marlies held the BEARS to just three shots on goal in the third period and hung on for the win.
Sabourin made 20 saves but saw his record drop to 7-8-2, while MacIntyre improves to 1-0-0. The BEARS ended the day 1-for-5 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
The BEARS will wrap up their schedule against the Western Conference tomorrow, February 17 with a 3:05 PM faceoff against the Rochester Americans from the Blue Cross Arena at Rochester’s War Memorial. The team returns home on Saturday, February 23 for a 7:00 PM matchup against the Adirondack Phantoms. “Chocolate-Covered February” continues, and all fans will receive candy upon exit courtesy of the HERSHEY Company.
