BEARS SUMMON THREE FROM READING ROYALS

January 12, 2013

HERSHEY, Pa.– The HERSHEY BEARS announced today that forwards Barry Almeida, Alex Berry and Matt Pope have all been recalled from the ECHL’s Reading Royals.  The announcement was made by BEARS President/GM Doug Yingst.

Almeida, 24, returns to the BEARS after recording 19 points (seven goals, 12 assists) in 21 games with the Royals.  The 5-7, 176-pound native of Springfield, MA joined the BEARS for the club’s final regular-season game of the 2011-12 season and scored his first professional goal on his second shift of the game.  He came to HERSHEY fresh off of winning the 2012 NCAA National Championship with Boston College (HE), while setting career highs in goals (22), assists (18) and points (40) in his senior season.  Almeida posted 92 points (45 goals, 47 assists) in 159 career games with Boston College.

Berry, 26, has appeared in 15 games with the Royals, posting 11 points (five goals, six assists) and a plus-5 rating in 15 games.  The 6-2, 220-pound native of Danvers, MA missed the entire 2011-12 season due to injury.  During the previous season, Berry posted AHL career highs in goals (14), assists (20), points (34) and penalty minutes (150) in 75 games with the Norfolk Admirals.  He was also selected as Norfolk’s IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year for his efforts in the community.

Prior to turning pro, Berry played four years of college hockey at UMass-Amherst (HE), where he lettered in all four years and put up 62 points (29 goals, 33 assists) in 124 career games.  He was originally selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the fifth round (153rd overall) in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.

Pope, 28, comes back to HERSHEY having put up three points (one goal, two assists) and a plus-3 rating in three games with the Royals.  He began the season with the BEARS, tallying four points (one goal, three assists) in 21 games.  The 6-1, 193-pound native of Langley, BC has played in total of 173 AHL games with HERSHEY, San Antonio, Manitoba and Binghamton, registering 42 points (19 goals, 23 assists).

The BEARS are home to host the Connecticut Whale tonight at 7:00 PM.  The first 5,000 fans will receive an ice scraper courtesy of UGI.  Tonight is also Washington Capitals Night, with the Capitals Red Rockers and other staff members in attendance.  Tickets for this game and all HERSHEY BEARS home games may be purchsed at the GIANT Center box office, by calling (717) 508-BEAR, or online at TicketMaster.com.
