ICECAPS STORM BACK TO CLAIM SHOOTOUT WIN

HERSHEY, Pa. – Stan Galiev scored twice and Carter Camper earned three assists, but the St. John’s IceCaps wiped out a three-goal deficit and claimed a 4-3 shootout win over the Hershey Bears on Saturday night at GIANT Center.

The first period belonged almost solely to Galiev.  Just 2:05 into the game, he accepted a pass from Camper and ripped a snap shot past the glove of IceCaps netminder Zach Fucale for a 1-0 lead.

The winger would strike again at 11:57 on a strong play by Sean Collins at center ice.  Collins muscled the puck away from an IceCaps defenseman and forced the pass ahead.  Galiev caught it in stride and blasted a shot past Fucale for a 2-0 advantage.

The IceCaps would appear to get on the board with a shorthanded goal by Michael McCarron, but video replay would show the puck did not enter the net.  Play continued and the Bears would make it 3-0 when Collins headed to the net front to tip Camper’s pass over Fucale at 14:53.

St. John’s woke up in the second period and cut the deficit to just one goal.  Brett Lernout would get the IceCaps on the board at 7:34 when his shot from the right point found its way through traffic and inside the right post past Justin Peters, for his first professional tally.

Another defenseman would pull the IceCaps within one goal at 13:31.  Morgan Ellis had a blocked shot deflect right into his path at center point, and he was able to step into a slap shot that sailed into the upper left corner.

Daniel Carr would then tie the game by whacking the rebound of a shot from Mac Bennett through the pads of Peters at 17:04 of the third.

The Bears outshot the IceCaps 4-1 in an entertaining overtime but Fucale and Peters stood their ground.  In the shootout, Galiev would answer a Charles Hudon tally in the shootout and after Collins was stopped in the first half of the fourth round, Gabriel Dumont ended the game with a near-stop move at the top of Peters’ crease.

Peters dropped to 3-1-2 on the season with 34 saves on 37 shots.  Fucale improved to 5-2-0 with 35 saves on 38 shots.  Hershey finished the night 0-for-3 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.
