KEITH AUCOIN HEADS BACK UP TO WASHINGTON

February 16, 2012

The Washington Capitals have recalled forward Keith Aucoin from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL), vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.

Aucoin, 33, leads the AHL in points (70; tied with teammate Chris Bourque) and assists (59) and has collected 11 goals in 43 games with Hershey this season. This marks the seventh time Aucoin has tallied at least 70 points in an AHL campaign, the fourth as a member of the Hershey Bears. Additionally, Aucoin is 13 assists shy of tying a career high for assists in a single season, and 30 assists shy to match the AHL record for helpers in a single campaign (89).

The Waltham, Massachusetts, native has appeared in five games this season with the Capitals and 80-career NHL games with Washington and the Carolina Hurricanes, collecting 25 points (eight goals, 17 assists). The four-time AHL All-Star was the winner of the John B. Sollenberger Trophy as the AHL’s leading scorer in 2010 and received the Les Cunningham Award as the AHL’s MVP for the 2009-10 season. In 673 career AHL games, Aucoin has recorded 777 points (223 goals, 554 assists) and is one assist shy of Art Stratton for fifth all-time in assists in AHL history. He is a two-time Calder Cup champion with the Hershey Bears

The 5’8”, 171-pound center was signed by the Capitals as a free agent on July 3, 2008. He will wear No. 23 for Washington and be available for the Capitals 10 a.m. practice Thursday at Kettler Capitals Iceplex.

Also today, the HERSHEY BEARS announced that the club has assigned defenseman Phil Oreskovic to the South Carolina Stingrays (ECHL).  The announcement was made by BEARS President/GM Doug Yingst.

Oreskovic, a 25-year-old native of North York, Ontario, has one assist and nine penalty minutes in six games with HERSHEY.

Oreskovic spent all of the 2010-11 season with the BEARS but missed a large portion due to injury and only appeared in 14 regular-season games.  He made one Calder Cup Playoff appearance.

The 6-4, 235-lb. blueliner spent his first four professional seasons with the Toronto Marlies (AHL), piling up 315 penalty minutes along with 31 points (four goals, 27 assists) between 2006-2010.  Oreskovic earned his first NHL recall to the Toronto Maple Leafs during the 2008-09 season and put up one goal, one assist and 21 penalty minutes in 10 games.

Oreskovic was originally selected by the Maple Leafs in the third round (82nd overall) of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.

The BEARS will take to the road for their next five games.  The trip begins tomorrow, February 17 with a 7:05 PM faceoff against the Providence Bruins.  The club returns to GIANT Center to battle the Norfolk Admirals on Saturday, February 25 at 7:00 PM.  Individual tickets for this and all regular-season home games are on sale now by calling (717) 508-BEAR, or by visiting ticketmaster.com.
