BEARS AGREE TO TERMS WITH FORWARD JOEL BRODA

HERSHEY, Pa. – The Hershey Bears announced today that the club has agreed to terms with forward Joel Broda on a one-year American Hockey League contract. The announcement was made by Bears President/GM Doug Yingst.Broda, 24, joins the organization after a successful year serving as team captain of the ECHL’s Bakersfield Condors. While playing in just 41 regular-season games for current Bears head coach Troy Mann, Broda led the Condors in goals (21), finished fourth in plus-minus efficiency (plus-seven) and ranked sixth on the team in points (40). In the Condors’ longest playoff run in team history, Broda also led the squad with eight goals and finished second with 12 points in 16 Kelly Cup playoff appearances.
The 6-0, 203-pound native of Yorkton, Saskatchewan has a total of 72 points (39 goals, 33 assists) in 76 career ECHL games with Bakersfield and the Orlando Solar Bears, and played for the host city of Bakersfield in the 2011 ECHL All-Star Game.
Broda, a 2008 draft selection of the Washington Capitals (5th round, 144thoverall), has also dressed in 132 career AHL games with the Houston Aeros, Oklahoma City Barons and Bridgeport Sound Tigers. He spent the entire 2011-2012 season in Houston, recording 27 points (14 goals, 13 assists) in 72 games. He has a total of 46 points (24 goals, 22 assists) over parts of four years in the AHL.
Prior to turning pro, Broda had a remarkable junior career. In 329 career games played with the Tri-City Americans, Moose Jaw Warriors and Calgary Hitmen, Broda amassed 261 points (141 goals, 120 assists). He led the entire ECHL in goals (53) during the 2008-2009 campaign, and was a member of Calgary’s 2010 WHL championship team.
