GIROUX SCORES TWICE AS BEARS BEAT SENS

October 17, 2009

In a night that began and ended with Alexandre Giroux scoring against his former team, the BEARS won 3-2 in overtime against the Binghamton Senators at Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena Saturday night. Giroux opened the scoring in the first period at the 4:23 mark when he scored his fourth goal of the season. The shot from the slot eluded Binghamton goaltender Andy Chiodo, and the BEARS led 1-0. Josh Hennessy would rally the Senators with his first goal of the season at 7:41 of the opening period to tie the game at 1-1. The score would remain deadlocked through the rest of the frame, with HERSHEY outshooting the Senators 12-9. The second period was a historic one for HERSHEY, firing a franchise record 27 shots at Chiodo, but only scored when rookie defenseman John Carlson picked up his first regular season goal at 9:33. Just prior to that, Cody Bass scored his first of the season at 7:43 to give the Senators a brief lead. The teams remained deadlocked through the third period, and the BEARS went to overtime for the first time this season. In sudden death, Giroux scored from Patrick McNeill at 1:11 to clinch victory for the BEARS. The win was HERSHEY’S third road win in four games this season. BEARS Radio Network Three Stars of the game: 1. Alexandre Giroux (Two goals to lead the way, including the game-winner) 2. Andy Chiodo (Terrific goaltending for Binghamton in a losing effort) 3. John Carlson (Scored his first regular season pro goal) Notes: The BEARS are off until next Friday when the club travels to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to face the Penguins at 7:05 p.m. The Senators come to Giant Center next Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. before the Portland Pirates descend on central PA next Sunday. Tickets are available at the Giant Center box office, or by calling (717) 534-3911.
