BEARS AND PENGUINS MEET SUNDAY

March 29, 2009

HERSHEY wraps up a stretch of four games in five nights Sunday as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins come to town. Face-off is at 5:00 p.m. HERSHEY scored three times each in the first and second period Saturday night and also scored four power play goals to defeat the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 7-2 at GIANT Center. Alexandre Giroux and Keith Aucoin each scored two goals, and the pair combined for nine points Saturday to pace the offense. Goaltender Simeon Varlamov, who was assigned earlier in the day by the Washington Capitals, earned the victory in net. The win gave the BEARS a five point lead over the second place Sound Tigers in the East Division standings with one game in hand on the team from southern Connecticut. Alexandre Giroux scored two goals Saturday to set a new franchise record for most goals by a player in a single season. Tony Cassolato set the franchise record 26 years ago in the spring of 1983, scoring 53. Giroux scored his 53rd and 54th goals of the season Saturday night in the second period against Bridgeport. The Bridgeport Sound Tigers, coming off a loss at GIANT Center Saturday night, are in Lowell Sunday to face the Devils at 4:00 p.m. The Tigers didn’t arrive in Lowell, MA until after 4:00 a.m. Sunday morning. The Tigers begin the day just two points ahead of third place Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Philadelphia will play the second of a two-game series with the Grand Rapids Griffins Sunday at the Spectrum. Sunday’s game for Philadelphia is a game in hand for the Phantoms in the club’s pursuit of the Binghamton Senators and the fourth and final playoff spot in the East. Binghamton is idle Sunday. Sunday’s game can be heard via the BEARS Radio Network (100.1 FM, 1490 AM, Sportsjuice.com, AHLLive.com) beginning with the pregame show at 4:40 p.m. John Walton and Ed Coffey have the call of the action. Call the GIANT Center box office for more information at (717) 534-3911.
