November 29, 2008

BEARS MAUL PHANTOMS By Jess Mikula Greg Amadio and Alexandre Giroux each netted two goals Saturday night, as the BEARS blanked the Philadelphia Phantoms by a score of 9-0. The BEARS dominated the Phantoms in the first period, scoring four goals on 15 shots and not allowing the visiting team a shot on goal until nearly 17 minutes into play. Graham Mink picked up his 11th of the year just seven seconds into the man advantage at 4:12. Keith Aucoin and Giroux tallied the assists. Giroux netted his 15th of the season as he lifted a pass from Mink past Philadelphia goaltender Scott Munroe at 8:09. Aucoin and Mink would set up Giroux for his second of the night at 13:16. Amadio recorded his first goal in a HERSHEY sweater at 13:48, netting a slap shot from the point. Giroux nearly notched a hat trick late in the period, as his shot grazed the inside of the post. The BEARS held a four-goal advantage after one. HERSHEY continued to barrage Munroe through the second period, piling on three more goals. Darren Reid scored his first goal of the season at 2:33, assisted by Andrew Joudrey. Reid’s goal marked the 100th of the season for the BEARS. Amadio netted his second goal of the night on a breakaway with a short-handed marker at 6:05. Quintin Laing added the helper. Joudrey added a goal of his own at 11:21, assisted by Steve Pinizzotto. Michael Teslak came in to relieve Munroe between the pipes at 11:21 and faced five shots. The BEARS held a 7-0 lead through 40 minutes of play. The home team would add two more goals to the score sheet in the third period. Laing scored his fifth goal of the season from Josh Godfrey and Joudrey at 8:20. Kyle Wilson tallied his ninth of the year at 10:18, assisted by Godfrey. Daren Machesney earned his eighth win and second shutout of the season, making 12 saves. HERSHEY went 3-for-10 on the power play. Notes: The BEARS conclude four games in five nights Sunday when the Norfolk Admirals come to town. Face-off is at 5:00 p.m. Tickets for the game are available at the GIANT Center box office, or by calling (717) 534-3911. The game against Norfolk is also the final game of November for the Chocolate and White. Following Friday's game in Albany, the BEARS will not play on the road until traveling to San Antonio to face the Rampage on Thursday, December 11. Graham Mink was reassigned to Hershey on Friday after skating in the NHL Wednesday for the first time since the 2005-06 season. Bryan Helmer, Sami Lepisto, Chris Bourque and Karl Alzner all accompanied the Washington Capitals to Ohio for a game with Columbus Saturday night.
