After suffering a pair of losses to start last week, the Hershey Bears enter a three-game week on a high note. The Bears are coming off a victory over Binghamton on Sunday on an evening the club established a new world record for the Teddy Bear Toss. Hershey currently sits at 10-12-0-1. The remainder of the team’s schedule in 2018 will feature all divisional games. December is tied for the club’s busiest month with 13 games, and eight are on home ice.

The Chocolate and White opened last week with a 3-1 loss to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Jayson Megna scored for Hershey to open the third period, but Wilkes-Barre’s early 3-0 lead proved to be too much to overcome. On Saturday, Hershey dropped a 4-2 decision to Springfield at Giant Center. Nathan Walker scored twice for Hershey in the losing effort. On Sunday, Hershey hosted its annual CommunityAid and WGAL Teddy Bear Toss. The Bears blasted the Binghamton Devils 6-3 and Riley Barber scored the goal that sent a new world record 34,798 stuffed animals flying at 10:02 of the first period. The Bears upended the previous world record of 28,815 teddy bears collected by the Western Hockey League’s Calgary Hitmen in 2015. Vitek Vanecek earned the win in goal for Hershey, stopping 29 shots.

UNLEASH THE FURRY: Sunday’s world record Teddy Bear Toss has helped the Hershey Bears go viral. The event has been covered by ESPN, TSN, CNBC, HLN, Yahoo, CBS Sports, NBC Sports, Barstool Sports, and Sports Illustrated. Across the country, TV stations in all 50 states in over 130 different cities have showed footage of the 34,798 bears flying last Sunday at Giant Center

SPROUL SIGNS ON: The Bears announced on Tuesday that the club signed defender Ryan Sproul to an AHL contract. Sproul is a veteran of 276 career AHL games, scoring 126 points (40 goals, 86 assists). He played 16 games with the New York Rangers last season, and has 10 points in 44 career NHL games. Sproul has split time with the Toronto Marlies and Laval Rocket this season, scoring six points in 12 games. He will wear #5 for the Chocolate and White.

FOUR SCORE...IT WAS A FEW YEARS AGO: In Sunday’s victory over Binghamton, Hershey went 4-for-6 on the power play, as the club got power play goals from Riley Barber, Nathan Walker, Liam O’Brien, and Aaron Ness. Sunday marked the first time the Bears had scored four power play goals in a game since Dec. 30, 2016. That evening O’Brien scored twice as the Bears went 4-for-8 on the power play in a 6-2 rout of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

MAKING GORDIE PROUD: While Riley Barber was the Teddy Bear Toss hero on Sunday, he also earned a career-high 29 penalty minutes and dropped the gloves for only the second time in his AHL career. With a goal, a pair of assists, and a fight in the victory, Barber posted a Gordie Howe Hat Trick for the first time in his pro career. Known more for his scoring, Barber leads the team in power play goals (5) and points (18).

TUNA TIME: Forward Liam O’Brien snapped a 10-game goalless drought with a pair of tallies in Sunday’s victory. The goals were O’Brien’s first markers in a month as the forward’s last goal had come on Nov. 2 in Rochester. O’Brien is tied for the team lead with nine goals and has potted 47 tallies in his AHL career.

BEARS BITES: Last Thursday the Bears signed defender Jake Linhart to a PTO. He made his debut last Saturday and scored his first AHL point, an assist, on Sunday…On Tuesday, Hershey released forward Derek Hulak from his tryout agreement…Defender Tyler Lewington enters this weekend just two games from 200 in his AHL career…Vitek Vanecek has won his last three starts and remains seventh in the AHL with a 2.43 goals against average.
