Bears Can't Overcome Penguins in 6-4 Loss

March 18, 2018

Jonas Siegenthaler scored twice, but the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins struck for three goals in the third period to skate past the Hershey Bears, 6-4, on Sunday at the Mohegan Sun Arena.

Hershey drew first blood and grabbed an early 2-0 lead within the game's first 4:57. The scoring started only 62 seconds after opening puck drop thanks to Liam O'Brien's 16th goal of the season. After creeping to the front of the net, O'Brien received a feed from Wayne Simpson for the conversion.

At 4:57, Joe Whitney doubled the Bears' lead. Simpson sent a bouncing puck from the right wing towards the slot area. After the puck glanced off Tim McGauley, it sat perfectly for Whitney who fired it top shelf past Wilkes-Barre/Scranton goaltender Anthony Peters. The goal ended Peters' night after yielding two goals on three shots.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton cut the deficit to one goal at 11:51. On the rebound of a Jarrett Burton shot from an angle, Joseph Cramarossa followed the initial shot and tucked it past Hershey goalie Pheonix Copley. The Chocolate and White answered back to grab a 3-1 lead prior to the first intermission. At 15:53, Siegenthaler blasted his fourth goal of the season top shelf past new goaltender Etienne Marcoux.

The Penguins responded for two goals in the middle stanza including the equalizer inside the final second of the period. At 11:58, Tom Sestito received a centering feed to the low slot and chipped the puck past Copley.

Thomas DiPauli handed Wilkes-Barre/Scranton a boost of momentum in the final second of the period when he tied the game 3-3. On a quick offensive zone entry with time ticking down, DiPauli fired a shot into the cage with less than a second remaining on the clock. The goal was confirmed after a brief video review.

The momentum shift benefited the Penguins into the third period, and they soon grabbed their first lead of the game. At 2:38, Christian Thomas jammed away at a loose puck in the blue paint and hit pay-dirt for his 13th tally of the season. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton added an insurance marker at 7:31 on DiPauli's second of the afternoon.

At 10:14, Siegenthaler also grabbed his second goal of the game and pulled the Chocolate and White within one. Siegenthaler finished a goalmouth scramble, scoring top corner to put Hershey within striking distance.

Moments after the Chocolate and White were pressing and came within inches of drawing even, the Penguins scored the dagger. At 15:19, Teddy Blueger finished a passing play on the transition and beat a sprawling Copley to make it 6-4 Penguins.

The Penguins out shot Hershey 33-22. Marcoux earned his first AHL win in goal. Simpson finished the night with three assists for the Bears. Hershey slides to 27-30-4-5 on the season, as the Penguins improve to 37-19-4-2. The Penguins have won six straight games vs. Hershey.

The Bears return to the ice on Saturday, March 24 for a road tilt against the Hartford Wolf Pack. Puck drop is slated for 3 p.m. from the XL Center.
