BEARS RE-SIGN CENTER JEFF TAFFE
June 14, 2013HERSHEY, Pa.– The HERSHEY BEARS announced today that the club has re-signed center Jeff Taffe to an American Hockey League contract for the 2013-14 season. The announcement was made by BEARS President/GM Doug Yingst.
Having compiled a resume of 180 games of NHL experience and 606 in the AHL, Taffe, 32, will enter his 11th professional campaign in 2013-14. Last year Taffe set a new career high for assists in a season (53), a number which also tied for the AHL lead. He led the league with 21 power-play helpers and finished second in the overall AHL scoring race with 71 points.
The 6-3, 215-pound native of Hastings, Minnesota achieved two significant milestones during the past season in Hershey. He appeared in his 600th American Hockey League game on April 7 at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, and two weeks later netted the 500th point of his AHL career on April 20 at Binghamton – becoming the third Bears player last season and 86th in the history of the AHL to reach the 500-point plateau.
The 2012-13 season was Taffe’s fifth consecutive in which he amassed 50 points or more. For all of his efforts, he was recognized as the Bears’ Most Valuable Player, he was named to the AHL’s Second All-Star Team and earned his third career appearance as an all-star, representing the Bears on the Eastern Conference squad at the 2013 Dunkin’ Donuts AHL All-Star Classic.
Taffe has amassed 500 points (203 goals, 297 assists) in his AHL career with Springfield, Utah, Hartford, San Antonio, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Rochester, Rockford and Houston. Prior to turning pro, he racked up 113 points (56 goals, 57 assists) in three years at the University of Minnesota (WCHA).
Taffe has also totaled 46 points (21 goals, 25 assists) while playing in the NHL with the Phoenix Coyotes, New York Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Florida Panthers, Chicago Blackhawks and Minnesota Wild. He was originally selected by the St. Louis Blues in the first round (30th overall) in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.
