AHL STANDINGS

BEARS AT PENGUINS: The Hershey Bears bring a six-game point streak in today’s contest with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The Bears finish out a three in three this afternoon, as they look to get back in the win column after their five-game win streak was snapped last night in a home loss to Rockford.  The Chocolate and White have struggled versus their I-81 rivals this season, losing four straight games to the Penguins, being outscored 14-3 in the process.

LAST TIME OUT: Hershey fell 4-3 last night to the Rockford IceHogs in overtime at the Giant Center. Despite being outshot 40-14, the Bears earned a critical standings point as they overcame a one-goal deficit three times. Hershey got goals from Liam O’Brien, Travis Boyd, and Riley Barber, while Vitek Vanecek was sensational in goal, stopping 36 shots. However, Rockford got two goals from William Pelletier, and John Hayden had a goal and an assist, scoring the overtime winner 1:46 into the extra session. Hershey went 2-for-8 on the power play while Rockford was 1-for-5. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton also lost last night, dropping a 3-1 contest at Syracuse. Freddie Tiffels scored for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 4:22 into the game, but the Crunch scored three unanswered goals, including two in the third period, to earn the win. Anthony Peters took the loss in goal, stopping 33 shots.

LAST TIME VS. PENGUINS: The Bears will finish the month of February the same way it started – At the Mohegan Sun Arena against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The Chocolate and White will be looking for a different result after losing a 4-1 decision to the Pens. Riley Barber opened the scoring for Hershey, but Wilkes-Barre/Scranton rattled off four unanswered goals. Andrey Pedan scored twice, including the game-winner at 5:34 of the third period. Kevin Czuczman added insurance at 11:40, and Jarrett Burton sealed the game with an empty netter at 17:44. The Bears finished the night 0-for-3 on the power play and 2-for-3 on the penalty kill. Pheonix Copley stopped 22 of 25 shots in the losing effort.

300 FOR GRAOVAC: This afternoon’s contest marks the 300th professional game for Hershey forward Tyler Graovac. The center has skated in 237 career AHL games with Iowa and Hershey, posting 122 points (58 goals, 64 assists). He has also skated in 62 NHL games with Minnesota and Washington, scoring nine points (seven goals, two assists). Graovac has collected 20 points (nine goals, 11 assists) in 35 games this season with the Chocolate and White. The native of Brampton, Ontario is in his fifth professional season. He has two goals and one assist versus the Penguins this year.

SEASON SERIES SUCCESS: Hershey’s Riley Barber and Dustin Gazley both lead the way this season with four points versus the Baby Penguins. Barber has two goals and two assists in eight games versus the Penguins, while Gazley has one goal and three assists. Lucas Johansen also has four assists versus the Penguins. On the other side of things, Daniel Sprong has blown everyone else out of the water, collecting 10 points (four goals, six assists) versus Hershey in just seven games this season. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton goaltender Anthony Peters has a 1.63 goals against average versus Hershey, while Casey DeSmith has a 1.44 goals against average in two games.

CAPTAIN TK: Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins captain Tom Kostopoulos continues to reach milestones despite an injury plagued season. On Friday, Kostopoulos returned from an eight game absence and tallied two assists in a 6-3 win over the Rockford IceHogs. Although Kostopoulos was held off the scoresheet in his lone meeting against Hershey on October 27, he has traditionally been a thorn in the Bears’ side. Since Kostopoulos has returned to the Penguins in 2012-13, he has played Hershey 49 times in the regular season and notched 14 goals and 22 assists for 36 points.

BEARS-PENGUINS FAST FACTS: Hershey’s Nathan Walker extended his point streak to four games with an assist last night. The mark is tied for the longest point streak by a Bear this season. Walker has three goals and three assists in that stretch…Former Hershey Bears forward Christian Thomas has added an Olympic bronze medal to his resume. Thomas represented Team Canada as the recent Winter Olympics on PyeongChang, and tallied one goal and one assist in six games. The Canadians captured the medal with a 6-4 win over the Czech Republic on Saturday…The Bears allowed a season-high 20 shots in the first period of last night’s game.
