Bears Land 3x All-Star Whitney, Chapie in Pair of Deals

February 9, 2018

The Hershey Bears, in conjunction with the Washington Capitals, have announced a pair of trades with the New York Rangers organization today. The Bears have acquired forward Joe Whitney from Hartford in exchange for defenseman Hubert Labrie. Additionally, the Capitals have obtained forward Adam Chapie from the Rangers for forward John Albert. All players will report to the AHL.

Whitney, 30, is a three-time AHL All-Star who has collected 19 points (nine goals, 10 assists) in 40 games with the Wolf Pack this season. The veteran left winger brings leadership and scoring punch to the Chocolate and White. Whitney served as Hartford's captain prior to the trade, and also was the captain of San Antonio prior to a late season trade to Tucson last year. Whitney posted his best AHL season in 2014-15 with Albany, striking for 60 points (23 goals, 37 assists) while serving as the club's alternate captain.

The 5-foot-6, 171-pound Whitney has scored 20 or more goals and posted 50 or more points three times in his AHL career. The native of Reading, Mass. has scored 297 points (123 goals, 174 assists) in 428 career AHL games with Portland, Albany, Bridgeport, San Antonio, Tucson, and Hartford. He also appeared in five NHL games with the New Jersey Devils, scoring his first NHL goal on Dec. 31, 2014 at Detroit.

Whitney was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by New Jersey in 2013. Whitney helped Boston College to two NCAA titles (2007-08 and 2009-10) during his four seasons as an Eagle. His younger brother, Steven, plays for Hershey's ECHL affiliate, the South Carolina Stingrays.

Chapie, 26, is in his second professional season after a strong four-year NCAA career at UMass-Lowell. With the Wolf Pack this season, Chapie has seven points (two goals, five assists) in 31 games. He has also appeared in 11 games with Greenville (ECHL), scoring 17 points (eight goals, nine assists). The 6-foot-1, 186-pound forward from Oxford, Mich. led UMass-Lowell to a Hockey East title in 2012-13, and scored 95 points (46 goals, 49 assists) in 148 NCAA games. He is in the final year of his two-year, entry-level contract.

Albert, 29, had 11 points (three goals, eight assists) in 33 games with Hershey. Labrie, 26, had seven points (one goal, six assists) in 35 games with the Bears this year. He posted 11 points (three goals, eight assists) in 70 games with the Chocolate and White in 2016-17.

Both Whitney and Chapie are expected to join the Bears ahead of tomorrow's game versus their old club. The Bears and Wolf Pack battle Saturday evening at 7 p.m. at Giant Center. Both players will not play tonight in Allentown as the Bears battle the Lehigh Valley Phantoms at 7 p.m.
