Capitals Re-Sign Djoos to Two-Year Deal

The Washington Capitals, the NHL affiliate of the Hershey Bears, have re-signed defenseman Christian Djoos to a two-year, $1.3 million contract, Capitals senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan announced today. Djoos’ contract is two-way during the 2017-18 season and one-way during the 2018-19 season.

Djoos, 22, registered 58 points (13 goals, 45 assists) in 66 games with the Hershey last season, recording career highs in points, goals, assists and games played. The 6-foot,164-pound defenseman ranked tied for first among AHL defensemen in assists in 2016-17 and ranked third in points. In addition, Djoos ranked second among Bears skaters in assists, third in points and tied for seventh in goals last season.

In 2016-17, Djoos posted the  most points by a Hershey defender since Michael Gaul’s 60 points during the 1999-00 season. He tallied 12 multi-point games and was named the CCM/AHL Player of Month for March after scoring 16 points (three goals, 13 assists) and a posting a +10 rating in 13 game. He was Hershey’s winner of the Dan Sernoffsky Most Improved Player Award and Milton Garland Memorial Award for Best Defenseman. 

Djoos was selected by the Capitals in the seventh round, 195th overall, in the 2012 NHL Draft. He represented Sweden at two IIHF World Junior Championships (2013, 2014) and one IIHF U18 World Championship (2012), capturing a silver medal at each tournament. Djoos is a son of former NHL defenseman Par Djoos, who played for the Detroit Red Wings and the New York Rangers.
