Bears Fall to Phantoms 6-2 Friday

January 13, 2017

(Allentown, PA- January 13, 2017)-The Lehigh Valley Phantoms went 4-for-12 on the power play to score a 6-2 win over the Hershey Bears on Friday night at the PPL Center. Darren Dietz and Aaron Ness scored for Hershey, but the Bears fell for the fifth straight game. The two teams rematch tomorrow night at the GIANT Center at 7 p.m.

The Phantoms opened the scoring at 12:35 of the first period on a goal by Colin McDonald. With Christian Djoos in the box, the Phantoms converted on their second power play of the game. Mark Zengerle’s shot from the right wing was denied by Hershey goaltender Vitek Vanecek, but McDonald was left uncovered in the crease. He backhanded a shot past Vanecek for his 13th goal of the season to make it 1-0.

Lehigh Valley scored again on the man-advantage at 18:05 of the first period as former Bear Chris Conner redirected a point shot past Vanecek to make it 2-0.

The Phantoms scored on a two-man advantage only 1:45 into the second period to extend the lead to 3-0. Jordan Weal notched his 12th goal of the season. After finding himself alone on the left wing, Weal snapped a shot past Vanecek's blocker to give the Phantoms a sizable lead.

The Bears cut into the Lehigh Valley lead at 7:31 of the middle frame. Dietz scored his third goal of the season, beating Lehigh Valley goalie Anthony Stolarz with a wrist shot from the right point. Liam O’Brien and Christian Thomas assisted on the goal that found its way through the five-hole of the netminder.

After two more Lehigh Valley goals from Corban Knight and Cole Bardreau, Hershey added a late power play marker from Aaron Ness in the third period. After a collision at the Hershey net, the Bears raced up ice. Chris Bourque, playing in his 500th career game with Hershey, fed the puck across to Ness on the left wing. The defender’s shot beat Stolarz for his fourth goal of the season to make it 5-2 Phantoms.

The Phantoms outshot Hershey 30-17 in the victory. Hershey was whistled for 14 penalties, totaling 44 minutes. The Bears went 1-for-5 on the power play. Hershey allowed six goals for the second straight contest.

Tomorrow's rematch between the Bears and the Phantoms at the GIANT Center is Scout Night. The puck drops at 7 p.m. Sunday, January 15 is STAR WARS Night featuring a STAR WARS jersey auction as Hershey hosts Binghamton at 5 p.m. Ticket information is available at HersheyBears.com.
