Paul Carey, Aaron Ness Re-Signed

June 24, 2016

HERSHEY, Pa. – The Hershey Bears Hockey Club announced today that the organization has re-signed defenseman Aaron Ness to a two-year, two-way contract, and has also re-signed forward Paul Carey to a one-year, two-way contract both beginning with the 2016-17 season.

The announcements were made by Bears President & General Manager Doug Yingst.
Ness, 26, is most recently coming off of a long Calder Cup playoff run with the Bears.

Dressing in all 21 postseason games, he registered 12 points, all assists, leading all Hershey defensemen in points and leading the AHL in postseason helpers.  In the regular season, Ness appeared in 62 games and posted 27 points (six goals, 21 assists), 22 penalty minutes and a plus-minus of plus-12.

The 5-10, 187-pound native of Roseau, Minnesota also dressed in eight NHL contests with the Washington Capitals, recording two assists.

Ness joined the club last season after playing his entire pro career in the New York Islanders’ organization.  In 280 games with the AHL’s Bridgeport Sound Tigers, he registered 123 points (23 goals, 100 assists).  He added three points (one goal, two assists) in 29 NHL games with the Islanders.

Prior to turning pro, Ness played three years of college hockey at the University of Minnesota (WCHA), where he amassed 43 points (six goals, 37 assists) in 111 career games.  Internationally, Ness won the bronze medal with Team USA at the 2008 IIHF U-18 World Championships.  He was originally selected by the Islanders in the second round (40th overall) of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

Carey, 27, returns to Hershey after playing in just 44 games with his newest team due to a season-ending injury suffered in February.  Despite the short stint, Carey managed 31 points (13 goals, 18 assists) and still ranked eighth on the Bears in total points at the end of the regular season.  Of his 13 goals, three ended up as game-winners, which tied for third on the team.

During the season, Carey was summoned by Washington and made his Capitals debut on January 9 against the New York Rangers.  During his second recall on February 6 at New Jersey, Carey scored his first NHL goal against the Devils for his one point in four total games with the Capitals.

The 6-1, 190-pound native of Weymouth, Massachusetts played in 17 games with the AHL’s Providence Bruins in 2014-15 after being acquired from the Colorado Avalanche, and tallied seven points (two goals, five assists).  Prior to his trade, he played in 43 games with the AHL’s Lake Erie Monsters and potted 27 points (13 goals, 14 assists).  He added one assist in 10 games with the NHL Avalanche.

Carey has a total of 127 points (55 goals, 72 assists) in 232 AHL games with Lake Erie, Providence and Hershey, and two points (one goal, one assist) in 26 NHL games with Colorado and Washington.

Prior to turning pro, Carey had a tremendous four-year career at Boston College (HE).  A two-time NCAA National Champion (2009-10, 2011-12), Carey totaled 86 points (45 goals, 41 assists) in 147 games with the Eagles.  He was originally selected by the Avalanche in the fifth round (135th overall) of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.
