Battling Bears Drop Overtime Decision to Monsters

Battling Bears Drop Overtime Decision to Monsters

June 12, 2016

CLEVELAND, OH – Oliver Bjorkstrand spoiled what was Justin Peters’ best game of the season by depositing a shot into the net with less than two seconds remaining in overtime, sending the Lake Erie Monsters to a 1-0 victory and the Calder Cup title on Saturday night in game four of the Calder Cup Finals at Quicken Loans Arena.  The Monsters win the series four games to none.

A well played first period, by both teams, would end scoreless.  Lake Erie had one of the best chances in the opening 20 minutes, a Josh Anderson partial breakaway that Peters denied with a lunging right-pad save.

The second period would end the same, thanks in large part to Peters, who reached out and made a backhand blocker-arm save on Sonny Milano down low in the opening minute of play.  The first penalties of the contest would also come late in the frame, giving both teams one power play chance.

60 minutes would also not be enough, as the game headed to overtime for the second straight game in Cleveland.

Hershey controlled the play for most of overtime, outshooting Lake Erie 7-5 until an icing call with 11 seconds remaining brought a faceoff back into Hershey real estate.  Taking the ensuing faceoff, the Monsters pressured at the front of the net.  Lukas Sedlak swept a shot from the low slot into traffic, and the puck deflected to the left of Peters’ net.  From a sharp angle, Bjorkstrand threw the puck on goal and it found its way in, ending the Bears’ season at 19:58.

Peters finished the night as the game’s third star, making 32 saves, and ended the playoffs with a league-best 11 wins.  Anton Forsberg stopped all 23 shots he faced, putting him at 9-0 in the postseason and tying Peters for the playoff shutout lead (two).

The Eastern Conference champion Hershey Bears thank their 10-season-running, league attendance-leading fans for all of their support.  Season tickets for the Bears’ 79th season of play are on sale by calling 717-508-BEAR.  Many different plans are available, with prices starting as low as $185 per seat.
