Monsters Get Past Bears in Overtime

June 6, 2016

CLEVELAND, OH – Dustin Gazley grabbed momentum with a late second-period goal but Oliver Bjorkstrand’s second goal of the game came just 1:20 into overtime, sending the Lake Erie Monsters to a 3-2 victory over the Hershey Bears on Monday night at Quicken Loans Arena.  With the win, the Monsters grabbed a 3-0 series lead in the Calder Cup Finals.

The Bears opened the scoring just 2:07 into the contest.  Ryan Stanton collected a feed from Carter Camper, got himself open in the left faceoff circle and blasted a drive past Anton Forsberg for his third goal of the postseason.

But at 6:44, the Monsters evened the contest.  Hershey attempted a pinch at the Lake Erie blue line, giving the hosts an odd-man rush.  Lukas Sedlak carried down the right side before sending a saucer pass across to Bjorkstrand.  The latter fired a one-timer past Justin Peters from the top of the left circle.

Penalties would add up against Hershey in the middle period, and on the Monsters’ third chance of the game, the hosts took a 2-1 lead.  Daniel Zaar got open in the left circle and wired a shot into the upper-right corner at 18:13.

But the Bears responded nicely when Zach Sill dropped a shot block behind him for Gazley, who stepped into a shot that sailed past a screened Forsberg with less that one minute left in the period.

Both goaltenders came up big in a scoreless third, forcing the extra time.  Zach Werenski would collect a pass and send a shot into traffic from the center point.  The shot was blocked but came right to Bjorkstrand, who stuffed it under Peters for the winner.

Peters fell to 11-8 in the postseason with a 25-save effort.  Forsberg improved to 8-0, making 17 saves on 19 Hershey shots.  The Bears finished the night 0-for-1 on the power play and 2-for-3 on the penalty kill.

The Baers now need a win to stay alive as the series continues with game four on Saturday, June 11.  Faceoff from Quicken Loans Arena is set for 7:00 PM.  The game will be broadcast live in central Pennsylvania on abc27.3, available locally on Comcast 245, Verizon Fios 462, Blue Ridge 152, Kuhn 69 and Nittany 227.

Fans without access to abc27.3 may catch the broadcast beginning at 6:20 on the Bears Radio Network of affiliates WQIC-FM 100.1, WHP-AM 580, via the Capitals Mobile App (Caps Radio 24/7), via the iHeartRadio App (WHP 580 Harrisburg) or online at CapsRadio247.com or WHP580.com.  Washington Capitals radio voice John Walton will provide the play-by-play.
