Barber's Hat Trick Helps Bears Cruise Past Crunch

January 30, 2016

HERSHEY, Pa. – Riley Barber highlighted a big Hershey Bears win with a hat trick plus an assist, and Dan Ellis turned away 24 of 25 shots to help the hosts to a convincing 5-1 win over the Syracuse Crunch on Saturday night in front of 10,964 at GIANT Center.  The Bears swept the weekend home-and-home set with five goals in both games, and split the season series three games each.

Syracuse would grab the first goal of the contest after the Bears owned most of the early-game possession.  Newly-signed Andrew Yogan trailed the play on a rush, collected a pass from Henri Ikonen and ripped a wrist shot off of the back-corner crossbar at 15:57.  Time would need to be added to the clock as video replay was required to confirm the goal at the next whistle.

Nathan Walker tied the game at 18:09, sneaking into the slot behind the Syracuse defense to one-time a feed from Barber behind Kristers Gudlevskis for his ninth goal of the season.

In the middle frame, Hershey grabbed its first lead of the game.  Dustin Gazley was denied on a shot from the right side of the Syracuse net, but the rebound of his shot came back to him.  With Gudlevskis off the post, Gazley fed Carter Camper for a chip-shot into the upper-left corner at 14:58.

The Bears made it 3-1 when Barber ripped a drop-pass from Gomez past Gudlevskis at 18:39.

Barber’s second of the night came on the Bears’ second power play chance of the night.  Travis Boyd’s shot was deflected to the left of the Crunch net, and the bouncing puck came wildly off of the back boards right to Barber for a tap-in at 1:01 of the third period.

The rookie would complete the hat trick by hitting the empty net from center ice at 19:35.

Ellis made many tough saves in the third period on the penalty kill and backstopped his 14th win of the season (14-6-4).  Gudlevskis saw his record drop to 8-8-4 with 23 saves on 28 shots.  The Bears finished the night 1-for-4 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.

The Bears return from the All-Star break on Friday, February 5 with a 7:05 PM faceoff against the Binghamton Senators from the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena.  Fans can catch the broadcast beginning at 6:25 PM on the Bears Radio Network of affiliates WQIC-FM 100.1, WTKT-AM 1460, WOYK-AM 1350, online at FoxSports1460.com and via the iHeartRadio app (Fox Sports 1460 Harrisburg).  Fans may watch the game for a small fee at AHLLive.com.
