BACK 2 THE BEARS - TRAVIS BOYD

June 9, 2015

RETURNING FOR 2015-16:  C  TRAVIS BOYD

Back on March 31, forward Travis Boyd was inked by the Washington Capitals to a two-year, entry-level contract – not long after recording career numbers in goals (19) and points (41) at the University of Minnesota.  While Boyd ranked second on the Golden Gophers in scoring during his senior year, he drew national attention by scoring 10 power play goals – ranking second overall.  The Second Team All-Big Ten honoree later joined the Bears on an amateur tryout agreement on April 7.  At the time, the Bears were battling to finish at the top of the East Division and were preparing for their trip to St. John’s, Newfoundland.  Rather than being inserted into an already regular lineup that eventually earned the Bears a 100-point regular season, Boyd stayed back to skate and practice.  He eventually earned his opportunity when injuries sidelined forwards Chandler Stephenson and Casey Wellman, and a one-game suspension was being served by forward Kris Newbury.  Boyd slotted in at center in his AHL debut on April 14 at Lehigh Valley.  He made a strong first impression, playing solid defensively as well as offensively.  It was immediately noticeable that Boyd has a talent for making plays and protecting the puck along the boards.  The Phantoms ultimately held the Bears to one goal in that final road game of the regular season at PPL Center, temporarily halting the Bears’ shot at the division title.  Hershey would return home and eventually lay claim to that accolade on April 17 against the Binghamton Senators – assuring Boyd another shot in the lineup in the season finale on April 18 against the same Phantoms.  Another solid game played gave Boyd his first career AHL points – a power play assist and a goal in the third period of a 5-1 victory.  He also earned second-star honors in the game.  Boyd will undoubtedly compete for a slot in September’s training camp – most likely for the center position.
