COPLEY SHINES AGAIN, BEARS BLANK PHANTOMS

October 26, 2014

HERSHEY, Pa. – Pheonix Copley turned side all 22 shots he faced to post his second consecutive shutout, Kris Newbury tallied his 499th career AHL point and eight different players found the score sheet as the Hershey Bears shut down the Lehigh Valley Phantoms by a 3-0 count on Sunday
evening at GIANT Center.

After a scoreless opening period, the scoring started to come in the middle frame. Just 4:08 in, Philippe Cornet notched his third goal of the campaign after taking a pass from Tim Kennedy, cutting toward the net and sliding a shot behind Phantoms goaltender Anthony Stolarz while falling down.

Hershey made it a 2-0 game by tallying their first shorthanded goal of the season. While aggressively attacking in the Phantoms zone, Mike Moore forced the puck loose and sent a feed into neutral ice for Dane Byers. The Bears captain then found Chandler Stephenson alone on the left side, and the rookie forward unleashed a snap shot that beat Stolarz to the short side at 11:34.

Copley made his best saves of the game in the early portion of the third period, most especially a sliding split save on Scott Laughton.

A late-period penalty on Joel Broda would bring Stolarz to the bench for an extra attacker. Copley made an attempt at the empty net, but his chance deflected toward the left corner on its way.

Dustin Gazley would find the net, however, at 19:39 to put the game away.

With the win, Copley improves to 3-0-0 on the young season, while Stolarz drops to 0-2-0 in making 27 saves. The Bears also take over the top spot in the East Division from the Phantoms by improving to 5-2-0-0.

Hershey goes back on the road for the next three games, beginning this Friday, October 31, with a 7:00 PM face-off against the Manchester Monarchs.
