SOUND TIGERS POWER PAST BEARS ON SPECIAL TEAMS

December 7, 2013

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Anders Lee scored two power play goals while Ryan Strome factored into all of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers scoring in a 4-2 victory for the hosts over the Hershey Bears on Saturday night at Webster Bank Arena.

David Kolomatis started things off for Hershey, depositing his third goal of the season on a rebound chance during the second Bears power play of the game.  Sound Tigers netminder Kenny Reiter got a piece of Peter LeBlanc’s chance from the right circle, but the puck came across to the left side for Kolomatis to slap the puck home at 4:47.

The Bears would earn six consecutive power plays in the frame – four following Kolomatis’ goal – but the Sound Tigers’ penalty kill held tough.

The Bears would then take two consecutive penalties late in the period, giving Bridgeport a two-man advantage.  Jon Sim connected with 20.4 seconds left in the period, when the puck bounced lively off of the back boards and toward the right side of David Leggio’s net.  Leggio was unable to slide his pad across before Sim shot the puck.

After Bridgeport’s fans celebrated with a teddy bear toss, the remaining seconds were added to the second period.

The middle period was all Lee, as his two power play strikes gave the Sound Tigers a 3-1 lead.

Jamie Johnson made the game interesting when he buried his first Hershey goal with a snap shot from the right faceoff dot.  The shot deflected off of the crossbar, over Reiter’s arm and into the net with 3:41 left to play.

Bridgeport’s Scott Mayfield later cleared the puck out of play in the defensive zone, handing the Bears their ninth power play chance of the night.  Halfway through, Leggio would leave for a sixth attacker and a two-man advantage began for Hershey.  But the Sound Tigers stole a pass made in their defensive zone, and Strome hit the empty net with a shot from center ice as the final second ticked off the clock, giving Bridgeport the victory.

Leggio made 22 saves but saw his record drop to 4-6-2 on the season and his personal three-game regulation unbeaten streak halted.  Reiter made 25 saves in picking up his fifth win of the season.

Hershey continues its road trip with a return visit to Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena on Wednesday, December 11, for a 7:05 PM faceoff against the Binghamton Senators.  The game will be simulcast on the Bears Radio Network and televised on ABC-27’s RTV channel 27.2, Comcast Channel 246, Verizon Fios Channel 461 and Kuhn Communications Channel 67 in Central Pennsylvania.
