BEARS SUFFER FIRST SETBACK TO PENGUINS

November 21, 2012

HERSHEY, Pa. – Jeff Zatkoff turned aside 15 shots in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins goal crease, while the team in front of him scored three times on special teams en route to a 4-0 blanking of the HERSHEY BEARS on Wednesday night at GIANT Center.

After a scoreless opening period featuring solid defense and goaltending at both ends of the ice, the BEARS got themselves into penalty trouble at the start of the middle stanza.  Beau Bennett struck first for the Penguins at 4:28, when his attempted centering pass deflected off of a skate and through netminder Braden Holtby’s pads.

Just 1:01 later, defenseman Simon Despres snapped a shot past a screened Holtby for a 2-0 lead on the Penguins’ second consecutive power play of the period.

After a physical conclusion to the period, the BEARS would earn a power play that carried over into the third.  But an attempted pass across the blue line was picked off by Benn Ferriero, and the Penguins forward skated alone from his own zone and beat Holtby with a shot off of the goaltender’s glove just 1:03 into the final frame.

Warren Peters rounded out the scoring when he stole the puck on the left boards in the offensive zone and sent a wrist shot banking off of the left post and past Holtby.

Holtby turned aside 26 shots and falls to 4-6-0 on the season.  Zatkoff picked up his third shutout of the year to even his record at 6-6-0.  The BEARS finished the night 0-for-5 on the power play and 6-for-8 on the penalty kill.

HERSHEY will take a trip north to visit the Adirondack Phantoms for the first matchup of the season on Saturday, November 24 at 7:00 PM.  The BEARS then return home to host the Toronto Marlies on Sunday, November 25 at 5:00 PM.  The first 3,000 fans will receive a gift card to the Turkey Hill Experience.  Sunday is also Breast Cancer Awareness Night, with many events taking place for charity throughout the evening.  The BEARS will be wearing special breast cancer awareness jerseys that will be auctioned off after the game on the ice, with a portion of the proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.

Tickets for these games and all HERSHEY BEARS home games are on sale at the GIANT Center box office, by calling (717) 508-BEAR, or online at TicketMaster.com.
