ELLIS, BEARS BLANK BRIDGEPORT

January 3, 2016

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Dan Ellis made 32 saves and Chris Bourque paced the Hershey Bears’ offense with two goals, as the visitors defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers by a 5-0 score on Sunday evening at Webster Bank Arena.

The Bears drew first blood in this game inside the final two minutes of the opening period.  The duo of Nathan Walker and Garrett Mitchell combined on a pretty two-on-one rush, which Mitchell finished with a backhander up and over goaltender Stephon Williams at 18:33.

Chris Bourque made it a 2-0 game, striking on the Bears’ second power play of the night.  He unloaded a low slap shot that beat Williams low to the glove side at 11:56 of the middle period.

Sean Collins then added to the lead, backhanding a shot into a virtually empty net after Dustin Gazley forced a turnover at the left circle.  Collins netted his seventh goal of the season at 14:11 for the 3-0 advantage.

In the third, Travis Boyd blocked a shot from a Sound Tigers blueliner and turned it into a breakaway pass for Bourque, who skated in and deked Williams to the backhand at 1:18 for a 4-0 lead.

Bridgeport’s defense would make an ill-advised line change late in the period while the Bears had possession, and Gazley would catch up to a Caleb Herbert pass high in the Sound Tigers’ end.  Williams came out to knock the puck away but Gazley beat him, and deposited a shot into an unguarded net at 17:12 to round out the scoring.

Ellis won his second straight game and improved to 10-5-2 on the season, posting his second shutout as well.  Williams turned away 27 of 32 Hershey shots and dropped to 7-8-0.  The Bears finished 1-for-3 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
