CARRICK SENDS BEARS PAST PIRATES

November 20, 2015

HERSHEY, Pa. – Connor Carrick’s shorthanded goal with 14.8 seconds left to play broke a tie and sent the Hershey Bears to their second consecutive victory, a 3-2 decision over the Portland Pirates on Friday night at GIANT Center.

Portland’s Logan Shaw would open the scoring at 12:36 of the first period, carrying the puck down the left wing and muscling toward the net.  He found a small space with a chip shot inside the far post, and the puck dropped over Justin Peters’ right pad for Shaw’s sixth goal of the season.

Chris Bourque would then tie the game on the Bears’ third power play of the night.  Taking a feed from Aaron Ness, Bourque fired a low shot at the crease and the puck banked off of Cameron Gaunce and past Mike McKenna at 8:06.

Dustin Gazley would give the Bears their first lead of the night at 2:41 of the third.  Collecting a deflected pass from Ryan Stanton, Gazley set up inside the right circle and ripped a shot past McKenna for a 2-1 advantage.

However, that lead lasted just 31 seconds as Dylan Olsen’s shot from the left point deflected off of a Bears defenseman, off of the post and in behind Peters.

The Pirates had the advantage late in the third, working a four-minute power play with 2:17 to go.  But Garrett Mitchell would hold the puck in the offensive right circle and spot Carrick at the right point.  The blueliner floated a shot that deflected past McKenna, and the Bears were able to withstand a two-man advantage for Portland with time winding down.

Peters stopped 22 of 24 shots and improved to 4-2-2.  McKenna saw a four-game win streak snapped, falling to 6-5-0 with 29 saves on 32 shots.  Hershey finished 1-for-3 on the power play and was perfect on seven penalty kills.

The Bears and Pirates face off again tomorrow, November 21.  The first 5,000 fans will receive a Bears team photo courtesy of David A. Smith Printing.  All fans are invited to the ice level for a 75-minute autograph session with the team after the game.  Individual tickets for this and all Bears home games are on sale at the GIANT Center box office, by calling 717-508-BEAR or online at TicketMaster.com.
