October 27, 2015

HERSHEY, Pa. – Jakub Vrana forced extra time by tying the game with 12.1 seconds left in regulation, but Marek Hrivik’s goal in the third round of the shootout sent the Hartford Wolf Pack to a 3-2 victory over the Hershey Bears on Sunday evening at GIANT Center.

The Wolf Pack would strike first a bit earlier in this game, when Nick Tarnasky scored the first of his two goals on the night at 9:08 of the first period.  Brady Skjei came a long way off of the Hartford bench to collect a pass from Chad Nehring, then fed a pass to an uncovered Tarnasky for a slam dunk behind Justin Peters.

The Bears earned the equalizer at 11:52 on a strong play by rookie Madison Bowey.  The blueliner darted down the left wing through neutral ice and let a snap shot fly from the top of the left circle.  The puck sailed through a screen and beat Hartford goaltender Jeff Malcolm short side.

After a scoreless second period, Hartford grabbed the lead back at 12:44 of the third.  Tarnasky would deposit the rebound of a point shot from Ryan Graves as he was stationed right at the top of Peters’ crease.

With time winding down and with Peters on the bench in favor of a sixth attacker, Riley Barber would make a strong play to get the puck through a Wolf Pack fence along the blue line and into play.  Chris Bourque hurried to collect the puck and fed a perfect pass for Vrana to one-time past Malcolm for his second goal of the season.

After an overtime largely controlled by Hershey, the shootout would be needed to award the extra point.  Bourque answered a goal by Brian Gibbons, but Hrivik finished things off in the last half of the third round to send the Wolf Pack to victory.

Peters dropped to 1-1-1 with 25 saves on the night, while Malcolm won his first game of the year in his first start, making 24 stops.  Hershey finished the game 0-for-2 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill, the Bears’ third straight game with no power play goals allowed.

The Bears hit the road to take on the Syracuse Crunch on Friday, October 30.  Faceoff from the War Memorial is at 7:00 PM.  Fans may listen to the broadcast beginning at 6:20 PM with the M&C Foreign Car Parts pre-game show on WQIC-FM 100.1, WTKT-AM 1460, via the iHeartRadio app (Fox Sports 1460) and via AHL Live.
