BEARS PICK UP STANDINGS POINT IN SHOOTOUT LOSS

January 31, 2015

HERSHEY, Pa. – Kris Newbury and Philippe Cornet helped the Hershey Bears battle back from a two-goal deficit to tie the game and force overtime, but Jonathan Marchessault would net the only goal of the shootout, sending the Syracuse Crunch to a 3-2 victory in front of 10,243 fans on Saturday night at GIANT Center.

The first period would end scoreless, mainly because of stellar penalty killing by the Bears.  Syracuse would earn a two-man advantage for 1:34 just past the halfway point of the period, but could not convert.  Pheonix Copley made four solid saves on the kill, totaling 10 stops in the opening frame.

Copley would also make a big save just 1:29 into the middle period, which came on a penalty shot by Vladislav Namestnikov.  But the Crunch would eventually solve Copley for the game’s first goal.  Tanner Richard took a pass from Yanni Gourde, walked into the middle slot and fired a wrist shot that deflected off of Copley’s blocker and into the net at 4:22.

The Bears would work their third power play of the game but found themselves down 2-0.  Gourde and Mike Angelidis took off on a two-on-one shorthanded rush and Gourde finished the play with a snap shot past Copley’s glove at 6:32.

The hosts would finally get on the board when Newbury took the puck straight down center ice and took a snap shot that deflected off of a Crunch defenseman’s stick and past the blocker of Andrei Vasilevskiy at 17:03.

The tying goal would come on Hershey’s fifth power play of the night, and it would come in the most unconventional way. Cornet would deflect a shot and the puck caromed off the back glass, off the top of the net, off the back of Vasilevskiy and into the goal.  After a lengthy review, the goal counted at 9:55 of the third.

The game would head to overtime, and the teams skated four-on-four until the clock ticked down to the final 11.7 seconds.  Neither team would capitalize in the quick three-on-three.

Marchessault would strike in the second round of the shootout, beating Copley over the glove.  Stan Galiev, Cornet and Chris Brown would all miss on their opportunities.

Copley made 30 saves in the game and one of two in the shootout, but his record drops to 7-3-2.  Vasilevskiy also made 30 saves to improve to 14-5-5.

Hershey picks up a point in the shootout loss and opens up a two-point advantage in the East Division, as the club’s record stands at 24-13-4-2.

The Bears are home tomorrow, February 1 with a special 2:00 PM matchup against the Norfolk Admirals.  The game is sold out.  All fans in attendance receive a complimentary one-day pass to HERSHEYPARK valid through July 31, 2015.  The Bears will also wear special Groundhog Day themed jerseys that will be auctioned online for charity.
