BIRTHDAY BOY GALIEV STARS IN OVERTIME WIN OVER ALBANY

January 17, 2015

HERSHEY, Pa. – On his 23rd birthday Stanislav Galiev scored one goal and added an assist, and then went on to net the overtime winner on a power play, and the Hershey Bears defeated the Albany Devils by a 5-4 count on Saturday night in front of 10,393 fans at GIANT Center.

The Bears hoped to set the tone and fast pace of the game, and they did just that.  Just 10 seconds into the contest, Casey Wellman grabbed a feed from Jim O’Brien and snapped a shot past the glove of Scott Wedgewood for his 12th goal of the season.

The Bears would get a power play shortly afterward, and made it count at 3:19.  Tomas Kundratek one-timed a shot from Wellman low along the ice, and the puck slid through Wedgewood’s pads for a 2-0 Hershey lead.

The Devils would get on the board at 8:04 to reclaim momentum. Stefan Matteau took a feed from Brandon Burlon on the visitors’ first power play of the game, and snapped a shot off the back crossbar from the right circle and in behind Philipp Grubauer.

The Devils then tied the game on a turnover by Hershey.  Reece Scarlett had the puck in the high slot and had time to wind up and blast a shot past Grubauer at 12:22.

Galiev took matters into his own hands at the 17:26 mark to put the Bears back on top.  He used his speed to skate around a Devils defenseman, cut across the crease and slip a shot behind Wedgewood for his 12th goal of the campaign.

Penalties would then hurt Hershey in the middle period.  At 7:43, Darcy Zajac cut to the crease and deflected a Matteau pass over Grubauer to knot the score.

Connor Carrick later made one of his perfect long head-man passes to Chris Conner on the Bears’ next power play chance.  Conner deked to the backhand and beat Wedgewood at 9:38, putting Hershey back on top 4-3.

But on a two-man Albany advantage, Reid Boucher – who fired two slap shots wide on the opportunity – connected on his third, one-timing a feed from Scarlett inside the right post at 11:23, tying the game 4-4.

The Devils would escape a five-minute major penalty whistled against defenseman Dan Kelly in the third period, and the game would go to overtime.

Devils captain Rod Pelley would take a slashing penalty during the three-on-three overtime session, putting Hershey on its seventh power play of the night.  Galiev, set up in the left circle, ripped a one-timer off of a feed from Carrick past the arm of Wedgewood for the decisive goal.

Grubauer made 25 saves to improve to 12-9-4 on the season, while Wedgewood dropped to 6-8-4 in making 24 saves.
