CAPS SELECT SIX IN 2013 NHL ENTRY DRAFT

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals selected left wing Andre Burakovsky (23rd overall), defenseman Madison Bowey (53rd overall), forward Zach Sanford (61st overall), defenseman Blake Heinrich (144th overall), center Brian Pinho (174th overall) and defenseman Tyler Lewington (204th overall) the 2013 NHL Draft, held Sunday at the Prudential Center in Newark.
 
Burakovsky, 18, was Washington’s first-round selection, 23rd overall, after recording four goals and seven assists in 43 games with Malmö of the Allsvenskan Swedish league. The native of Klagenfurt, Austria, posted four goals and one assist in five games with Sweden at the U-18 World Junior Championships last season. The 6’1”, 176-pound forward is the son of former NHLer Robert Burakovsky and helped Sweden win the silver medal during the 2012 U-18 World Junior Championships.
 
Bowey, 18, compiled 30 points (12 goals, 18 assists) and 75 penalty minutes in 69 games played with Kelowna of the WHL. The 6’1”, 195-pound blueliner ranked sixth among WHL defensemen with a plus-41 rating in 2012-13 and participated in the 2013 CHL Top Prospects Game. The Winnipeg native helped Team Canada win the gold medal at the 2013 Under-18 World Championships. Bowey contributed four points (two goals, two assists) and led all Canadian skaters in average ice-time (21:03) during the tournament. He also won gold with Canada at the 2012 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament.  
 
Sanford, 18, collected 36 points (12 goals, 24 assists) and 22 penalty minutes in 37 games played with the Islanders of the Eastern Junior Hockey League (EJHL). The 6’3”, 185-pound forward finished ranked fourth on his team in points and added four goals and four assists in seven playoff games. The Salem, Mass. native has committed to Boston College in 2014-15.
 
Heinrich, 18, recorded 20 points (three goals, 17 assists) and 110 penalty minutes in 42 games with Sioux City of the USHL. The 5’11”, 194-pound defenseman finished fourth on the team in penalty minutes and was selected to the 2013 USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game.
 
Pinho, 18, compiled 12 goals, 24 assists and 24 penalty minutes in 21 games played with St. John’s Prep High School in Massachusetts. The 6’ center was ranked 109th on the NHL’s Central Scouting end-of-season rankings. He is expected to attend Providence College in 2014-15.
 
Lewington, 18, collected two goals and 24 assists along with 131 penalty minutes in 69 games with Medicine Hat (WHL) last season. The 6’1”, 189-pound defenseman led his team in penalty minutes last season and finished the season ranked 66th on Central Scouting’s final rankings.
