CAPITALS SIGN, RECALL DEFENSEMAN STEVE OLEKSY

March 5, 2013

HERSHEY, Pa.– The HERSHEY BEARS announced today that defenseman Steve Oleksy has been signed by the Washington Capitals and recalled to the NHL club.  Additionally, defenseman Brett Flemming has been reassigned to HERSHEY from the ECHL’s Reading Royals.  The announcements were made by BEARS President/GM Doug Yingst.

Oleksy, 27, earns his first recall to the National Hockey League after appearing in 55 games with the BEARS in 2012-13, tying for third on the team in games played.  His 151 penalty minutes lead the team and rank third among AHL defensemen.  He has recorded 14 points (two goals, 12 assists), and is coming off of a two-assist effort on Sunday.  His point total is one shy of his AHL career best, registered with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers last season.

The 5-11, 186-pound native of Chesterfield, Michigan has appeared in 122 AHL games with HERSHEY, Bridgeport and Lake Erie, recording 33 points (three goals, 30 assists), 288 penalty minutes and a cumulative plus-21 efficiency rating.  Oleksy’s plus-16 rating last season ranked tied for third among his Sound Tigers’ teammates, despite his starting the season with the ECHL’s Idaho Steelheads.

Oleksy played his first professional season in 2009-10 following a three-year collegiate career with the Lake Superior State Lakers (CCHA).

Flemming, 22, has appeared in five games with HERSHEY this season, recording one assist, two penalty minutes and a plus-one rating.  With the Royals, Flemming has registered two goals, 13 assists, 77 penalty minutes and a plus-four rating in 50 games.

The 5-11, 184-pound native of Regina, SK earned 21 games with the Chocolate and White in his rookie year of 2011-12, posting four points (two goals, two assists).

Prior to turning pro, Flemming played in 147 games in his junior career with the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors (OHL), totaling 105 points (nine goals, 96 assists) and 288 penalty minutes.  His plus-60 efficiency rating in 2009-10 set a Majors franchise record and led the OHL, the same season in which he helped Mississauga to a berth in the Memorial Cup finals.

Flemming was originally selected by the Washington Capitals in the fifth round (145th overall) in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

The HERSHEY BEARS hit the road for a pair of games against the Norfolk Admirals next weekend.  The teams face off at Norfolk Scope on Friday, March 8 at 7:30 PM and Saturday, March 9 at 7:15 PM.  The team returns home on Sunday, March 10 for a 5:00 PM faceoff against the Binghamton Senators.  Individual tickets are available at the GIANT Center box office, by calling (717) 508-BEAR or online at TicketMaster.com.
