LINESMEN: Ryan Daisy (#90) & Brian Oliver (#80)
BEARS vs. MONSTERS:  Welcome to GIANT Center for tonight’s matchup between the HERSHEY BEARS and the Lake Erie Monsters, proudly presented by Verizon.  Tonight is the first of two meetings between the two teams.  Lake Erie is the top AHL developmental affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche.
ALL-TIME:  The teams will play their 10th all-time meeting tonight, with the Monsters holding the edge in the series at 5-2-0-2.
THE LAST TIME:  On February 23 at Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena, the Monsters completed the sweep of the two-game series, winning by a count of 4-3.  Ryan Potulny started the scoring, getting a setup from former Monsters blueliner Julien Brouillette for his 20th goal of the season.  Lake Erie wiped out that one-goal deficit by scoring three times in the second, on goals by Patrick Rissmiller, Patrick Bordeleau and Zach Cohen.  BEARS captain Boyd Kane then netted his 14th goal of the year on a power play early in the third, cutting HERSHEY’s deficit to one.  But Peter MacArthur deflected a shot from Cameron Gaunce into the net to give the Monsters some necessary insurance.  Tomas Kundratek scored with 1:25 left to make things interesting but the Monsters held on for the win.

RECENT RECAPS:  The BEARS won their third consecutive game on Wednesday night, defeating the Worcester Sharks by a 3-2 score in a shootout.  Boyd Kane scored a power-play goal to open the scoring, giving the BEARS a 1-0 lead after one.  Following Denny Urban’s strike just 15 seconds into the second period, T.J. Syner scored on a breakaway out of the penalty box, giving the BEARS the lead again.  But with 10.7 seconds left to play and the Sharks’ net empty, Daniil Tarasov found the puck in traffic and tied the game.  The teams played a rare 3-on-3 for the first 1:39 of overtime, but neither team was able to score in the extra session.  Garrett Mitchell and Ryan Potulny then netted shootout goals, while Grubauer was credited with four stops on five chances in the win.
Lake Erie, meanwhile, is coming off of a long trip to Texas.  On Saturday, Dean Strong broke a 2-2 tie as the Monsters won a back-and-forth game against the Houston Aeros.  Strong also assisted on the Monsters’ opening goal and earned the game’s first star.  Sami Aittokallio picked up his 10th win of the season, stopping 26 of 28 shots in the Lake Erie net.

LOGGING MINUTES:  Goaltender Philipp Grubauer has made three starts for the BEARS, and all of them have gone beyond regulation.  He is now 2-1-0, and both of his wins came in shootouts (January 12 vs. CT, 4-3 and January 16 at WOR, 3-2).
ONE FOR THE TEAM:  BEARS goaltenders Dany Sabourin and Philipp Grubauer became the first goaltending duo in modern HERSHEY history to share a shutout, when the pair blanked the Connecticut Whale on Sunday by a 5-0 count.
DYNAMIC DUO:  Sabourin and Grubauer, along with current Washington Capitals netminder Braden Holtby, have combined to bring the BEARS into second place in the AHL in goals against per game (2.41).
KUNDRATEK IS AN ALL-STAR:  The American Hockey League announced on Thursday that defenseman Tomas Kundratek will represent the BEARS at the 2013 Dunkin’ Donuts AHL All-Star Classic in Providence, RI on January 27 and 28.  Kundratek exactly matched his AHL career-best numbers (12-11-23) on Sunday with one goal and one assist against Connecticut, and set a new AHL best with 24 points when he assisted on Boyd Kane’s power play goal on Wednesday at Worcester.  Kundratek has one goal and three assists in a three-game point streak, and ranks third among AHL defensemen in both goals (12) and power-play goals (six).
KANE JOINS 900 CLUB:  Captain Boyd Kane, who played in the 1,000th game of all the top professional leagues on January 8 at Bridgeport (ECHL-71, AHL-898, NHL-31), became the 13th player in history to appear in 900 AHL games in Saturday’s contest against Connecticut.  Ironically, Kane played his first AHL game on November 20, 1998 as a member of the Hartford Wolf Pack, the team that became the Whale after the 2009-2010 season.  In BEARS history, Kane ranks 37th in all-time games played, four games behind Brian Willsie.  Former BEARS left winger Les Duff ranks 12th in all-time games played.
