BEARS RETURN HOME AFTER 5-2 WIN AT NORFOLK
NORFOLK, Va. – Jon DiSalvatore scored two goals, Patrick McNeill netted the eventual game-winning tally and Braden Holtby won his second consecutive game with 24 saves in the HERSHEY BEARS’ 5-2 victory over the Norfolk Admirals on Wednesday night at Norfolk Scope.
It took until late in the first period for the game’s first goal to be scored, and it went to the visitors. The line of T.J. Syner, Zach Hamill and Mathieu Beaudoin again produced on a play that started with Hamill taking the puck away deep in the Norfolk zone. Beaudoin, who was covered well in the right circle, fought for the puck and then fed it in front. Syner slammed the pass past Admirals goaltender Igor Bobkov with 54.7 seconds remaining in the frame, giving HERSHEY a 1-0 lead.
Kyle Palmieri tied the game for the hosts at 7:39 of the second, when he slapped home a feed from Peter Holland from the top of the crease past Holtby.
The BEARS then opened the game up, scoring twice in under one minute for the second consecutive game. DiSalvatore kept battling after Bobkov stopped his original shot, then chipped a backhand rebound inside the right post at 12:37. Jeff Taffe and Evan Barlow picked up the helpers.
McNeill made it a 3-1 game at 13:28, firing a slap shot from the center point through traffic and over Bobkov’s glove. Dmitry Orlov and Matt Pope set up the play.
The Admirals cut the BEARS lead to one on a perfect deflection from John Mitchell. Mitchell, who was angling toward the net from the left circle, caught a piece of Gabe Guentzel’s shot from the left point and tipped it under the arm of Holtby at 6:48 of the third period.
The BEARS’ Garrett Mitchell gave the visitors insurance on a perfect one-timer set up by Boyd Kane from behind the Norfolk net. Kane backhanded a pass from the trapezoid into the low slot, where Mitchell sent it into the upper-left corner past Bobkov at 16:23.
DiSalvatore’s second of the game came on a shot into the empty net with Bobkov off for an extra attacker. Jeff Taffe stole the puck while Norfolk was pressuring, skated into the Admirals end and fed DiSalvatore for the goal at 19:38.
Holtby improved to 6-6-0 with the win. Bobkov, who made 30 saves, dropped to 3-6-0 on the season. The BEARS finished the night 0-for-2 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
The team returns home for games on Friday, November 30 at 7:00 PM against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers and on Saturday, December 1 at 7:00 PM against the Admirals. Saturday is WGAL Teddy Bear Toss Night, and all fans are asked to bring a stuffed toy to toss onto the ice after the BEARS score their first goal.
