SABOURIN SHINES BUT SHARKS CLAIM SHOOTOUT VICTORY

February 11, 2012

HERSHEY, Pa.  – Brodie Reid finally solved goaltender Dany Sabourin in the seventh round of the shootout, sending the Worcester Sharks to a 3-2 victory over the HERSHEY BEARS on Saturday night at GIANT Center.

The Sharks opened the scoring on their first power play of the night.  With captain Boyd Kane handed a major penalty for boarding and Sharks forward Jimmy Bonneau given a roughing call, the Sharks worked with three minutes of power play time.  Rookie Jack Combs was able to find the puck behind the BEARS net, and with Sabourin in the crease in a seated position, hurried a shot into the net before Sabourin could get his glove down for a 1-0 lead at 17:09.

The BEARS ended up with a power play shortly after.  The Sharks were unable to gather the puck after it bounced around in the slot.  The puck slid to Chris Bourque at the center point, who took a wrist shot that sailed through traffic and beat Tyson Sexsmith at 18:52.

Neither team would score in the middle frame.  And after playing a more disciplined third period, the BEARS grabbed a 2-1 lead when Cody Eakin chipped home the rebound of Kyle Greentree’s shot from the doorstep with 2:01 left to play.  But a key tripping call on the BEARS’ Mike Carman allowed the Sharks to pull their netminder and skate with a two-man advantage.  Combs made a pass from the right corner that slid through the crease right to Tim Kennedy in the left circle.  His tap-in tied the score with 1:16 remaining, setting the stage for the overtime and eventual shootout.

Both netminders turned aside their first six opponents, but Reid’s shot bounced in off of Sabourin’s glove for the winner.  Sexsmith stopped Patrick McNeill to claim the win.

Sabourin falls to 10-7-3, making 29 saves in regulation and overtime and six stops in the shootout.  Sexsmith improved to 10-8-5, stopping 22 shots through 65 minutes of play and all seven shootout attempts.

The BEARS ended the night 1-for-6 on the power play and 4-for-6 on the penalty kill.

The BEARS remain home to host the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins tomorrow, February 12 with faceoff at 5:00 PM.  Individual tickets for this and all regular-season home games are on sale now by calling (717) 508-BEAR, or by visiting ticketmaster.com.
