PENS SILENCE BEARS SATURDAY 5-0

February 13, 2010

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton scored three times in the first period and never looked back Saturday night in a 5-0 win over the BEARS at Mohegan Sun Arena. Wyatt Smith started the scoring with his 11th goal of the season. Smith tipped a Chris Conner shot at the 7:42 mark to give the Pens a 1-0 lead. Dustin Jeffrey gave Wilkes-Barre/Scranton a 2-0 lead at 11:03, scoring in close against HERSHEY goaltender Braden Holtby. Conner would give the home team a three goal lead before the end of the first, striking at the 16:59 mark. The BEARS took control of the shots on goal in the second period, firing 14 at Penguins goaltender Brad Thiessen, but failed to score. Penguin forward Jesse Boulerice, just released from the penalty box, scored an even strength goal at 19:52 to give Wilkes-Barre/Scranton a 4-0 lead after two. Eric Tangradi picked up his 11th goal of the season at 8:54 of the third to round out the scoring. The loss was just HERSHEY’S 10th of the season in regulation, the fewest in the AHL. BEARS Radio Network Three Stars of the game: 1. Brad Thiessen (Shutout) 2. Chris Conner (Best player on the ice Saturday) 3. Wyatt Smith (Goal and two assists) Notes: The BEARS signed forward Charlie Kronschnabel to a player tryout contract prior to the game. Kronschnabel, who made his HERSHEY debut in the game, came from Reading (ECHL) to play Saturday. The loss for Holtby was just his third regular season defeat of the season. HERSHEY is home Sunday to face the Lowell Devils at 5:00 p.m. The game marks the return of former BEARS penalty minute leader Louis Robitaille to HERSHEY. Robitaille, who played for the BEARS from 2005-08, signed this season with the New Jersey Devils after a season in Europe.
