BEARS STORM BACK TO DEFEAT ICECAPS

April 10, 2015

ST. JOHN’S, NL. – Philipp Grubauer made 33 saves and the Hershey Bears scored three unanswered goals to wipe out a first-period deficit and claim a 3-2 victory over the St. John’s IceCaps on Friday night at Mile One Centre.

The IceCaps struck first following a turnover in the Hershey zone.  J.C. Lipon stole the puck on the near boards and fed the point for Will O’Neill, who fired the puck from up high, and Chase Balisy got a stick on it to slip it through Grubauer’s pads at 7:01.

Patrice Cormier made it 2-0 just over 10 minutes later on a quick passing play.  Peter Stoykowych passed down low to Joel Armia, who set up Cormier for a one-timer from the bottom of the left circle.  Cormier’s shot sailed inside the far post at 17:19 for his 11th goal of the season.

The Bears then posted a superb response period in the second, and fought back to tie the game.  Liam O’Brien would get the Bears on the board, when he used a few bodies as a screen and a cutting Mike Moore as a decoy.  He had time at the top of the right circle to wind up and blast a shot into the upper-left corner past IceCaps rookie Eric Comrie at 7:01.

After a great Cameron Schilling would then execute a perfect lob play from the Bears’ end to spring Dustin Gazley on a breakaway from the offensive blue line.  Gazley caught the pass onside, faked Comrie and deposited a shot inside the right post for his 18th goal of the season at 15:13.

Grubauer made several key saves with the game tied, giving the Bears a great chance to complete the comeback.  The visitors did just that on a line rush, when Gazley passed to Tim Kennedy in the right circle.  Chris Conner headed to the net front and tapped a pass from Kennedy behind Comrie with 5:57 left, putting Hershey in front for the first time.

Grubauer’s best save came when Scott Kosmachuk’s wraparound sat loose for Lipon.  The backstop threw out his right pad in split fashion and knocked Lipon’s chance aside.  The IceCaps would pull Comrie for a sixth attacker, but could not find the equalizer despite some good pressure.

Grubauer improved to 27-16-5 with the win, while Comrie played admirably in his pro debut, making 28 saves in the loss.

The Bears’ record stands at 44-20-5-3 (96 points), and the club has reduced the magic number to clinch the East Division to four points.

The Bears and IceCaps play again tomorrow, April 11 at 6:00 PM ET.  Fans may listen to the broadcast beginning with the M&C Foreign Car Parts pre-game show at 5:20 PM on the Bears Radio Network of affiliates WQIC-FM 100.1, WKBO-AM 1230, WOYK-AM 1350 and via the iHeart Radio app (WHP-AM 580).
