BEARS FORCE OVERTIME BUT FALL TO PENGUINS

December 15, 2014

WILKES-BARRE TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Chris Brown’s goal with 2.7 seconds left in regulation forced overtime, but Adam Payerl slammed home the winner 3:10 into the extra session, sending the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to their second straight 3-2 victory over the Hershey Bears on Sunday evening at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the opening period.  The Bears’ line of Tim Spencer, Liam O’Brien and Dustin Gazley was the best at generating scoring chances.  The best opportunity came when a Michal Cajkovsky shot from the center point skipped wildly up into the air and hit the crossbar.  Gazley found the rebound, but the puck was on edge and his backhander flipped just over the net.

Early in the second period, Hershey would grab the game’s first goal.  Tim Kennedy’s saucer pass found Connor Carrick at the center point, and his slap shot would deflect off of a Penguins player in front and past goaltender Jeff Zatkoff at 3:26.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton tied the game late on their fifth power play of the contest.  Shortly after failing on a two-man advantage that lasted for 1:53, a Conor Sheary shot from the left circle was stopped by Philipp Grubauer, but the puck deflected to the left of his crease where Jean-Sebastien Dea had an open net in which to deposit a rebound at 15:46.

Just 38 seconds later, Reid McNeill would fire a shot into traffic from the left point.  Dominik Uher found the rebound in the middle of the slot and ripped it home for a 2-1 Penguins lead.

The Bears killed another short-lived five-on-three chance early in the third, and battled hard until they were finally rewarded.  Brown, who was originally credited with the goal given to Carrick, scored for real at 19:57 when his slapper from inside the blue line dipped under Zatkoff’s glove and into the net.

A failed entry in overtime by Hershey would send Wilkes-Barre/Scranton back three-on-one.  Grubauer made a split save to deny a tip by Derrick Pouliot, but the Bears were still unable to recover the rebound.  Sheary grabbed it, sent it to his left where Payerl had time to snap a shot into the net for the victory.

Grubauer falls to 9-7-3, making 26 saves on 29 shots.  Zatkoff picked up the win to improve to 9-5-1, in  a 20-save effort.

The Bears are on the road to take on the Lehigh Valley Phantoms on Friday, December 19, with face-off from PPL Center set for 7:05 PM.
Friday’s game will be televised locally to central Pennsylvania viewers on ABC-27.2, Comcast 246, Verizon Fios 461, Blue Ridge Cable 152 and Kuhn 67, with the voice of the Bears Scott Stuccio and ABC-27 sports director Gregg Mace on the call.  Fans may also listen to the M&C Foreign Car Parts Pre-game Show beginning at 6:25 on the Bears Radio Network of affiliates WQIC-FM 100.1, WTKT-AM 1460 and via the iHeart Radio app for smartphones (1460 AM).  Darrell Henry will handle the radio play-by-play.

The Bears return home to face the Springfield Falcons on Saturday, December 20 at 7:00 PM.  The third class of the Hershey Bears Hockey Club Hall of Fame will be inducted in a pre-game ceremony.  The team will also wear special Hall of Fame Night jerseys to be auctioned off live following the game.  Individual tickets for this and all remaining home games are available at the GIANT Center box office, online at TicketMaster.com or by calling 717-508-BEAR.
