BEARS POWER PAST ADMIRALS FOR FIRST WIN

October 13, 2014

NORFOLK, Va. – Kris Newbury added to his strong weekend by scoring two goals, Pheonix Copley made 29 saves in his AHL debut, and the Hershey Bears gave their coaching staff their first victories in a 5-2 decision over the Norfolk Admirals on Monday night at Norfolk Scope.

The Bears started the game in a similar way to Saturday, storming out to an early lead.  Defenseman Jon Landry made a beautiful cross-ice pass through two Norfolk skaters right onto the tape of Stan Galiev, whose snap shot sailed past goaltender Igor Bobkov at 8:35.

Two other Bears players later combined for their first points in a Hershey sweater.  Tim Kennedy held the puck on a rush and carried all the way into the left corner before sending a pass in front.  Chris Conner was driving toward the net, caught the pass and ripped it past Bobkov at 10:07 for a 2-0 Hershey lead.

Newbury started off his strong night early in the second period, setting himself up perfectly to intercept a Norfolk pass made from behind Bobkov’s net.  He wasted no time in snapping the puck past Bobkov on the turnover for an unassisted goal at 2:18 and a 3-0 Bears advantage.

Copley, who stopped all 11 shots in the first period, could not easily find Chris Wagner’s first shot attempt from the right circle shortly after Newbury’s tally.  The puck squeezed through his right arm and dropped at his side, but Wagner got there first to get Norfolk on the board at 3:34.

Norfolk gained some momentum by killing a lengthy two-man advantage for Hershey, but Joel Broda restored the Bears’ three-goal lead as time was winding down in the middle stanza, taking a pass from Steve Oleksy and firing a low snap shot past Bobkov’s blocker at 19:27.

Matt Bailey brought Norfolk one step closer with his first of the season at 2:30 of the third, beating Copley with a shot inside the left post.  But Hershey would put the game away on Newbury’s second of the game, a tap-in of a Dustin Gazley cross-crease pass at 13:26.

Norfolk took two more penalties that handed the Bears another two-man advantage for what would be the rest of the game, and despite the Bears inability to cash in, the visitors cruised to victory.

Copley improves to 1-0-0 on the young season, while Bobkov drops to 0-1-0, making 32 saves in his season debut.

The Bears continue their stretch of five consecutive road games with a matchup against the Springfield Falcons on Saturday, October 18.  Face-off from MassMutual Center will be slightly past 7:00 PM as the Falcons will hold a home-opener pre-game ceremony.  Fans may listen to the game beginning with pre-game at 6:20 PM on the Bears Radio Network of affiliates WQIC-FM 100.1, WTKT-AM 1460, WOYK-AM 1350, WRBT-FM 94.9 HD-2 and on the iHeart Radio application, station WTKT-AM 1460.

Hershey will host the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the club’s home opener on Saturday, October 25.  The Bears will wear special opening-night jerseys that will be auctioned off after the game, and the first 8,000 fans will receive a magnetic schedule courtesy of PNC Bank.  Tickets for this game and all home contests may be purchased at the GIANT Center box office, by calling (717) 508-BEAR or online at TicketMaster.com.
