FOUR-GOAL THIRD PROPELS ICECAPS PAST BEARS

October 18, 2013

ST. JOHN’S, Newfoundland – Ben Chiarot broke a 1-1 tie in the third period, a frame in which the St. John’s IceCaps scored three other times en route to a 5-1 win over the Hershey Bears on Friday night at Mile One Centre.

The visitors were forced to kill off the game’s first penalty just 3:54 into the game and were successful. The team then earned four consecutive power play chances, and converted on the fourth. With Eric O’Dell sitting in the box, Jeff Taffe was finally able to snap the team’s 0-for-14 power play drought with an unassisted wraparound that got past IceCaps netminder Eddie Pasquale at 12:31.

The Bears took an 11-8 lead in shots on goal into the intermission.

Just 28 seconds into the second period, the hosts tied the score when J.C. Lipon slapped home a cross-crease pass from Josh Lunden past David Leggio while the IceCaps were on a power play.

Both Leggio and IceCaps netminder Eddie Pasquale played a stellar contest, with each making spectacular saves through the early portion of the third.

Chiarot then collected a faceoff win at the left point and sent a wrist shot into traffic at 8:59. The shot deflected off of the stick of a Bears defenseman and over Leggio, giving St. John’s the lead which they would not relinquish.

At 10:13, on a turnover along the offensive right boards, the puck deflected toward the slot where IceCaps captain Jason Jaffray was waiting. He turned and fired a slap shot that appeared to dip under Leggio’s glove on its way in.

John Albert made it a 4-1 game when he finished off a two-on-one rush with Carl Klingberg. Albert’s shot went low to the stick side past Leggio at 13:19.

Austen Brassard, playing in his first pro game, tallied the final goal of the contest with 1:06 left to play. Holding the puck on another odd-man rush, Brassard rang a shot off the right post and past Leggio to round out the scoring.

Leggio made 35 saves on 40 shots, but fell to 0-2-0. Pasquale evened his record at 2-2-0 with a 24-save performance.

The Bears and IceCaps will play again tomorrow, October 19 with faceoff set for 6:00 PM eastern time from Mile One Centre. The Bears return home to host the Hartford Wolf Pack on Saturday, October 26 at 7:00 PM. The first 3,000 fans will receive a keytag schedule courtesy of Hershey/CKC Pharmacy.
