LOOKING FOR 60 AS THE SEASON WINDS DOWN

April 9, 2010

The BEARS begin a regular season ending two-game series against the Norfolk Admirals Friday night at Norfolk Scope. It’s the final tune-up for the Chocolate and White before Wednesday’s Game One of the East Division Semi-Finals at Giant Center. Face-off in Hampton Roads Friday night is 7:15 p.m. HERSHEY and Norfolk enter play Friday night with different paths and different senses of urgency. For the BEARS, the Friday/Saturday weekend set in Norfolk represents nothing more than a chance to earn a bit more history in what has already been the best regular season in terms of wins in AHL history. The BEARS stand one win away from becoming the first AHL team to post 60 victories in a single season, and four standings points away from setting a new league standard for points in a single season. HERSHEY heads into play Friday with 121 points, three back of the 1992-93 Binghamton Rangers, who posted an AHL best 124 that year. Two wins in Hampton Roads, and Mark French’s team can say in both wins and points, the 2009-10 edition of the HERSHEY BEARS is the best ever. For the Admirals, there are more urgent matters as the weekend series starts. Norfolk begins play clinging to the fourth seed in the East Division and the chance to play HERSHEY in the division semi-finals starting Wednesday night. However, the Admirals and potential Atlantic Division crossover team Bridgeport are tied in points with 82, and the Sound Tigers have three games remaining to Norfolk’s two. If Bridgeport finishes ahead of Norfolk in terms of points, the Tigers will make the playoffs and transfer to the East for round one. Heading into the final weekend of the regular season, three playoff spots remain to be clinched in the Eastern Conference, including two spots within the East Division. Around the AHL Friday, Lake Erie travels to Grand Rapids in a battle of two teams outside the playoff picture, and Bridgeport is at Lowell to play the Devils. Lowell can clinch a playoff spot Friday with a win in regulation. Springfield is at Providence Friday, while Toronto travels to Rochester to battle the Americans. Albany tunes up for the postseason Friday with a game against potential first-round opponent Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. The Pens have not clinched a postseason berth, but could wrap up a spot Friday if they win and HERSHEY wins in regulation/OT/SO, or takes a point against the Rats and the BEARS win in regulation Friday. Worcester looks to wrap up a division title Friday night, hosting the Hartford Wolf Pack, Binghamton looks to keep its very slim playoff hopes alive Friday with a game at Adirondack, while Portland is at Manchester, Hamilton takes on Syracuse, Chicago is at Milwaukee and Peoria heads north to play playoff-bound Manitoba at MTS Centre. Rockford and Texas, both postseason participants starting next week, play one another at Cedar Park Center in Austin Friday. Friday’s game can be heard via the BEARS Radio Network (100.1 FM and www.Sportsjuice.com) beginning at 6:55 p.m. John Walton has the call of the action from downtown Norfolk.
