HOLTBY STYMIES SYRACUSE WITH 33-SAVE EFFORT

December 26, 2009

HOLTBY STYMIES SYRACUSE WITH 33-SAVE EFFORT Bears Win Fifth Straight Game By Jess Mikula Coupled with a phenomenal performance from Braden Holtby in net, the line of Chris Bourque, Mathieu Perreault and Francois Bouchard fueled the HERSHEY offense Saturday night, as the BEARS defeated the Syracuse Crunch 4-1. The win marked the seventh consecutive home win and the fifth straight victory overall. Neither team found the score sheet through the first 20 minutes of play. The Syracuse offense controlled much of the opening period, as the Crunch outshot the BEARS by a 15-7 margin. Holtby held off the Syracuse attack, making several saves at point-blank range to keep the visitors off the board in the first. The Chocolate and White struck twice in the second stanza. Zach Miskovic fired a shot from the right point, as Kyle Wilson deflected the puck into the net for his 10th goal of the season at 4:20. Boyd Gordon tallied the secondary assist. Perreault added his third of the year, finishing a pass from Bouchard and Bourque at 17:21. The BEARS carried a two-goal advantage after two. Bouchard potted a goal of his own in the third period, beating sprawling Syracuse netminder Dan LaCosta for his ninth of the season at 7:30, with assists from Bourque and Perreault. Perreault found the back of the net a second time Saturday night with a power play marker from Patrick McNeill and Wilson at 15:55. Trevor Frischmon would spoil Holtby’s shutout late in the third, finishing a barrage of shots at 16:54, from Kevin Harvey and Simon Ferguson. Holtby earned his sixth win of the season in net, denying the Crunch on 33 of 34 shots. The BEARS’ power play went 1-for-5, and HERSHEY blanked Syracuse on all four of its man advantages. Saturday marked the first time that the BEARS and their opponent were tied in shots on goal. Bears Radio Network Three Stars of the Game: 1. Braden Holtby (33 saves on 34 shots) 2.
