HERSHEY STORMS INTO HOLIDAY BREAK WITH 5-1 WIN

December 20, 2009

BEARS TROUNCE TORONTO Hershey Captures Fourth Straight Win By Jess Mikula With three assists Sunday night, John Carlson recorded his fifth multi-point effort of the season in a 5-1 rout of the Toronto Marlies, as the BEARS skated to the club’s sixth consecutive home victory and fourth consecutive win overall. The HERSHEY offense got off to a slow start Sunday night, as the home team registered its first shot on goal better than six minutes into play and four minutes into a Toronto kneeing major. Zach Miskovic put the BEARS on the board with his second goal of the year, rifling a pass from Mathieu Perreault and Oskar Osala past Marlies netminder Joey MacDonald at 10:18. The Chocolate and White defense held off the Toronto rush, allowing the visiting team its first and only shot of the period nearly 18 minutes into the game. HERSHEY held a 9-1 shot advantage and a 1-0 lead after one. Jay Beagle struck for the BEARS with the eventual game winner, hammering home a pass from Carlson for his sixth of the season at 3:15. After six consecutive minor penalties assessed to HERSHEY, the home team converted on its own power play, as Keith Aucoin connected with Alexandre Giroux and Carlson for his 14th goal of the season at 19:28. The Chocolate and White penalty kill held off two Toronto 5-on-3 power plays in the second stanza to keep the Marlies off the score sheet and maintained a three-goal advantage through 40 minutes. Francois Bouchard potted his eighth of the year with a wrister from the right circle at 1:46. Perreault and Osala added the helpers. Boyd Kane netted a 4-on-4 marker from Carlson and Beagle at 12:49. BEARS goaltender Braden Holtby surrendered his only goal to Darryl Boyce on Toronto’s third two-man advantage of the night at 13:41. Holtby backstopped the Chocolate and White to his fifth win in net this season, turning aside 15 of 16 shots. The penalty kill was a staggering 7-for-8, and the power play struck twice in five chances. Bears Radio Network Three Stars of the Game: 1. Jay Beagle (game-winning goal and an assist) 2. John Carlson (three assists) 3. Braden Holtby (15 saves on 16 shots) Notes: Boyd Gordon was assigned to the BEARS on a conditioning stint by the Washington Capitals. Expected to play Sunday night, Gordon did not make it to HERSHEY because his flight was canceled. Goaltender Michal Neuvirth made his third start in net for the Capitals Saturday night, earning his first win of the season. Former BEAR Quintin Laing played in his first game for Washington since sustaining a broken jaw on Nov. 17. Sunday’s contest marked the last game for the BEARS before Christmas break. The Syracuse Crunch will come to town Saturday, Dec. 26, for a 7:00 p.m. start, and HERSHEY will play its final home game of 2009 Sunday, Dec. 27, against the Norfolk Admirals, with face-off slated for 5:00 p.m. Tickets for both games are available at the Giant Center box office or by calling (717) 534-3911.
