BEARS SCORE SEASON HIGH NINE GOALS SUNDAY

December 6, 2009

BEARS MAUL WOLF PACK Hershey Offense Dominates in 9-2 Smattering By Jess Mikula Thirteen BEARS skaters found their way onto the score sheet, with eight of them recording multi-point efforts Saturday night, as HERSHEY decimated the visiting Hartford Wolf Pack by a score of 9-2. The BEARS scored three different ways with shorthanded, even strength and power play goals in the opening period Sunday night. Gavin Morgan found his first goal of the season at 5:33, breaking into the Hartford zone one-on-none for a shorthanded marker high glove side on goaltender Steve Valiquette. Andrew Joudrey added the lone assist. Andrew Gordon struck on the man advantage, as he fired a one timer from the left circle at 12:22. Francois Bouchard and Kyle Wilson recorded the helpers on Gordon’s 13th of the year. Steve Pinizzotto fed Joudrey a centering pass from Grant McNeill, which Joudrey netted for the even strength goalâ€"his fourth of the seasonâ€"to round out first period scoring at 15:26. HERSHEY carried a three-goal advantage to the dressing room after 20 minutes. The Chocolate and White scored early and often in the second period, barraging Hartford with six goals, the most in any single period this season. Gordon potted his second of the night just 50 seconds into the period, with assists from Keith Aucoin and Patrick McNeill. Wilson added a power play marker, flipping the puck over Valiquette’s shoulder to chase him from the game at 2:47. The Wolf Pack found the score sheet at 3:06, capitalizing on a turnover in front of Neuvirth with a shorthanded goal from Jordan Owens. Michael Dubuc fired back with his third of the year for HERSHEY, as he beat relief netminder Matt Zaba stick side at 4:51. Bourque launched a screaming slap shot from the point for his third goal and second power play goal of the weekend at 15:23, assisted by Gordon and Aucoin. Steve Pinizzotto closed scoring for the BEARS with a pair of goals late in the second period, his fourth and fifth of the season. A deft backhand found its way past Zaba for Pinizzotto’s first even strength goal of the season at 16:46 before he notched an unassisted shorthanded goal at 18:11. Pinizzotto now leads the league in shorthanded goals this season with three in 21 games. The BEARS held a commanding 9-1 lead over the Wolf Pack after two. Hartford netted the lone goal of the third period, as Dane Byers snapped the Chocolate and White’s perfect home ice penalty kill at 18:23. Michal Neuvirth earned his 10th win in net this season with 23 saves on 25 shots Sunday night. HERSHEY scored three times on six power play chances and denied the Wolf Pack on six of seven opportunities. Bears Radio Network Three Stars of the Game: 1. Andrew Gordon (two goals, one assist) 2. Steve Pinizzotto (two goals) 3. Andrew Joudrey (game winning goal) Notes: With two goals and one assist, Andrew Gordon extended his point streak to six games Sunday night. Kyle Wilson shows points in five of his last six games. Karl Alzner tallied an assist, and four former BEARS scored for Washington in the Capitals’ 8-2 triumph over the Flyers in Philadelphia Saturday night. Tomas Fleischmann and Mike Green potted two goals apiece, while Brooks Laich and Dave Steckel each added a goal. On this date in 1965, HERSHEY won its eighth consecutive road game over the Providence Reds 1-0. The eight-game streak still stands as a franchise record.
